Leaders are looking after employees, but who is looking after them?
We've read a lot about leaders looking after employees, but they need to remember to look after themselves. We all know the old adage about putting your oxygen mask on first...
I've summarised a Management Today article for you - you can subscribe using the link below to get the full version.
Are you a CEO/Leader and feeling new levels of stress? I'm not surprised. You're not only dealing with steering your organisation through a pandemic but you're expected to provide all the answers (or at least try to), show your human side, be vulnerable and look after everyone else's mental health.
In the UK this week our restrictions tightened & we're heading towards winter - a mental health crisis is likely looming (I know, I'm a joy but don't shoot the messenger!)
Five ways leaders can look after themselves:
- TALK OPENLY ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH - don't be afraid to share your own stories/experiences. You make it safe for others to do so.
- ALMOST EVERYTHING WILL WORK AGAIN IF YOU UNPLUG IT FOR A FEW MINUTES, INCLUDING YOU - schedule digital free time, play - play isn't just for kids, it's important for adults!
- THE SYMPATHY WINDOW - recognise how you're feeling when you wake. Review and set your intention for the day ahead. What's one positive thing you will do today?
- THE MIND, BODY, SOUL APPROACH - meditate, go for a walk, even just making sure you get enough water! Self-development, journaling - find what works for you and stick to it.
- GET MENTAL HEALTH TRAINING - attend specific mental health first aid training - you will be able to recognise the signs in yourself as well as be able to help others. This is particularly important as spotting the signs is harder because you're not together in person.
