Great Guest Feature By Shoana Taylor...
Kicking off Leaders Live 8th Ed is Shoana Taylor, Energy Management expert. Shoana was on the show a couple of weeks back and we all loved her and her stuff. In the event, Shoana led us through a powerful breath work exercise (see podcast link further below too to listen to that).
Shoana kindly wrote this article for all you lovely people at Leaders Live - that's what I call, 'spreading the love' - thanks Shoana. ????
THE BURN-OUT MAP AND NAVIGATING THE TERRAIN.?
Quick summary...
Some ways to look at where you are on the burn-out map.?
Burn-out can be over-looked and stigmatised and can happen in the blink of an eye, or gradually over years. Creating open dialogue is essential.?
Emotional balance is key to performance.?My (Shoana) model identifies 3 areas of burn-out. Physical burn-out, emotional burn-out, mental burn-out.?
Things to think about:?
Q. What are your relationships like? Energising or draining?
Q What is your environment like does it drain you or is it uplifting? What is the lighting like and airflow? Are there plants? Do you have a natural place to retreat to when you need it???
Q. What emotional frequencies do you hang out in most of the time? in anxiety and stress (more states than emotions) or ease and happiness?
Q. What is your fuel or INPUT like? Is your diet health promoting or depleting?
Q. What are your coping mechanisms? ?
The detail...
So the real problem nowadays is that there is a mind-body split and this is something that is typical culturally in the western developed countries.?
We have trained our minds to become divorced from our bodies and from its signals. This is cultural conditioning and a means to develop resilience and mental toughness and although they may be very good attributes to help us get up when we have fallen down, they are not so helpful when it comes to a burn-out path, because we're not sensitive to our needs and we override them time and time again .?
We have become used to living in a place of overwhelm and we have become used to living a place of stress and it is normalised, and when we're really tough we no longer respond to any red light warning signals that may come from a body.
Pain is the most obvious signal fatigue another signal, but let’s look a pain for a moment.?So we have adapted culturally to numb pain with pills and concoctions instead of listening. A headache for instance is really telling us something is wrong and it might not be something in our head at all - we might have a trapped nerve in our neck and we might have a build up of muscular tension in our neck and shoulders we might be dehydrated, there could be numerous reasons why we have a headache but when we take the pill and we cut off from that signal we are detaching from any core message from our bodies. So my approach to burnout is really to create proper communications between the both mind and body again.?
So,?when one starts to open up to the body signals and (really many of them can be very subtle)?the magic can happen. The same applies to how we send messages to our bodies from our mind whether it be consciously or subconsciously effects our performance.?
This is very well known in psychology, energy-psychology (EFT, hypnosis, RTT)?and actually even mainstream medicine because of the placebo effect. We know that when we’re told something works, it does (in this case that our mind does most of the work), and our bodies get better.?
One of my favourite authors and somebody whose work I follow and I'm quite influenced by is David R Hamilton PHD. He’s done a lot of deep research work and has gathered many many studies he's a great resource.
In his book “How the Mind can Heal the Body’ David describes a sham surgery that took place in a study where 21 patients received an actual surgery for angina to tie off their arteries. 12 patients only received a partial surgery and their arteries were not tied off. Amazingly 83% of the sham surgery patients experienced the same improvement as those who had experienced that actual surgery.??
It goes to show how powerful the mind is. Looking at this the other way when we really are receptive to the body’s signals enables this to not only create a more powerful communications but then enables us to harness our body and take advantage of it in better ways. It also prevents us from mistreating our bodies which over time then leads to illness. It has been recorded that 90% of illness today is caused by stress. That's a really big number so we can't always control the external stressors in our lives of course, but we can learn to manage our responses and we can adjust our lifestyles.
How I work with my approach to burnout is to re-establish that mind-body communication. I teach advanced visualisation techniques and body scanning. Also cellular health, gut health and eating vital food, which is our fuel.?
I also help to uncover the typical character traits, and?life responses of people in burnout mode. These character traits maybe mental toughness inability to understand one as physical limitations, taking on too much, Inability to delegate, wanting to please, poor boundaries there’s a long list of those. I help someone become aware so they can identify their very own personal responses which tend to be repeated and are on autopilot. These are often deeply rooted in a person’s drivers and unconscious beliefs. I help to clear those.?
We also look at where the tipping points are and what those tipping points are because these are unique and they are individual, and we work around those by putting in tools and gears.?
It’s very important to understand where your tipping point is to prevent you from falling into ill health, or some kind of chronic condition.?
Part of prevention involves developing a daily well-being practice so for example is very simple one is noticing when you have a dip in the day instead of motoring through just to take 10/15 minutes out just to take a pause and just remove yourself from that situation you're in. If you're in front of computer screen or perhaps you’re running off your feet, depending on what activity you're doing you need to do the opposite that will restore you in that moment. Sitting for too long creates body pain and?if you've got a lot of mental clutter and your mind is overloaded and your stressors are from a mental point, then the advice would be to pop outside engage back with your body stretch and just get some natural physiological enjoyment. On the other hand you might be somebody who works on your feet all the time, involving non-stop movement and running around.?
You will need to pause and relax and just BE. Day-dreaming, looking out the window or whether it is to just go sit on the bench outside or to do some breath-work or meditate (I offer tools) these are the kinds of little moments that help us manage energy.?
Energy management.? Has two components. Physical energy which is vitality and used in your OUTPUT. I also refer to the energy system as used in Chinese medicine, such as the meridian pathways and the HEF (Human Energy Field) the electro magnetic component of us. Emotional Frequency (which is the predominant emotion or state that you hang out in daily), is also very important, as is our Mental Outlook. These can either be energising and resourceful or depleting as they directly affect out cortisol levels, flight fight response, immune system and neurotransmitters.?
For example, you may you may find yourself feeling frustrated, annoyed or worried and in and of themselves those emotions ought not to be suppressed that's not the point. But the point is to connect with them instead of becoming divorced from them so we can rectify the underlying problem and we can start returning emotional balance. Tools can help enormously in regulation too.?

So like the old line, what is B&W and ‘red’ all over? It’s a book right! (red = read).
A couple of weeks back we chatted about stories to make Business life even more successful. This next Leaders Live we take that a chapter or two further and translate your stories into a book ?? (did you get what I did there?). They say, we all have a book (buried deep) inside us.
It was Benjamin Franklin that said "Either write something worth reading, or do something worth writing."?
So, do you have a Big Idea (or even the start of one) that could become a book?
Have you ever thought that writing ??? a book could be a game changer for your Business - to share your wisdom with even more people and open new doors?
And perhaps to get it done, you could even use your 2022/3 marketing budget! Now there’s an idea hey?
We explore…
*Why do you think Business & Thought Leaders should write a book?
*How can you be sure your published book will be read?
*What makes a successful Business book? What makes it useful?
