The Leader's Lifeline: Prioritising Your Health Is Your Business’s Best Strategy


Dear Leader,

In the hustle of meetings, decisions, and strategic overviews, there’s one critical meeting you might be skipping without even realising it—the one concerning your health.

I want you to know that - well-being is the new wealth!

You are the cornerstone of your business. Your well-being directly influences your team, your decisions, and, ultimately, the success of your organisation. Yet, it’s startling how often this crucial aspect is sidelined until it demands attention through fatigue, stress, or illness.


Why Your Health Can’t Wait

I am deeply interested in systems thinking, so I am revisiting one of my favourite audiobooks, "Thinking in Systems" by Donella Meadows . What exactly is systems thinking? It's a way to view the world and its complex interactions differently from traditional, reductionist views. Meadows explains that “a system isn’t just any collection of things. “A system is an interconnected set of elements that is coherently organised in a way that achieves something.”

I’ll explain this using the clock as an example. Just as every part of the clock works together to tell time, in a system, each element is vital and works in harmony with others to accomplish something meaningful.

Now, imagine your organisation as a complex system running smoothly under your guidance. Now, imagine it without you. Difficult, isn't it? That's the scenario we risk without embedding health into our strategic framework.? As a leader, your health is linked to the systemic health of your organisation. Here’s why integrating health into your leadership strategy isn’t just beneficial—it’s essential:

  • Resilience: Physical health fosters resilience. It prepares you to face challenges with more energy and bounce back faster from setbacks.
  • Clarity and Decision-Making: Regular physical activity sharpens your mind, enhances problem-solving skills, and boosts creativity. These are your tools for making sound, strategic decisions.
  • Influence and Morale: Healthy leaders inspire healthy teams. Your energy and vitality set a tone for the workplace, promoting a culture of health and productivity.


Integrating Health Into Your Daily Leadership Routine

You don’t need to overhaul your life to integrate health effectively. Here are small, impactful ways to begin:

  • Scheduled Well-being Break: Just as you schedule important meetings, block out time for physical activity. A 15-minute walk or a quick stretching session can be invigorating.
  • Walking? Meetings: Turn one of your regular meetings into a walking meeting. Discuss agenda items while walking. It adds physical activity to your day and introduces a fresh setting that can lead to more creative thinking.
  • Visibility and Accountability: Share your health goals with your team. Let them see you value health—not just as a policy but as a practice. This transparency increases accountability and encourages a supportive environment.


A Call to Action

This week, I challenge you to assess your health strategy as critically as you would any business strategy.
