Leaders, let’s finish the year on a high!

Just last week I had a meeting with a client of mine who mentioned he was flying in all of his leaders from around the country so they could attend the organisation’s Christmas party. This organisation is a national company, but their team members primarily work remotely –?it has its perks, of course, but many teams crave the chance to connect in person and build stronger connections with those they work with each day.?

To celebrate this Christmas, the organisation held two parties, one in Sydney and one in Melbourne. Their team leaders were given the choice as to which party they attended and the organisation paid for their travel.?

Why? Because they believe in the power of bringing people together.?

Of course, not every organisation can do this. Budget constraints, schedule constraints –?there’s a lot of reasons to not do it. But when you do, it can have an incredibly positive impact on your team.?

Christmas Checklist for Leaders?

As the holiday season barrels towards us, it’s an opportunity to be thinking about how this time of year can be used to show appreciation, communicate clearly, bring your team together, celebrating and reflecting on the year that’s gone by. You don’t even need to splash out on something as luxurious as flying in your team from every corner of the country!?

? Christmas gifts –?put thought and consideration into your team’s Christmas gift, with something personalised for each direct report.

?? Handwritten cards –?every person on your team has contributed to the success of the organisation this year. Make sure you tell them in a clear and encouraging way, just how much their efforts have meant to you and the wider team.

? Client appreciation – whether it’s handwritten cards or small gifts, sending a token of your appreciation to clients is always well received.

? Christmas party – everybody loves to let their hair down and mark the end of the year, celebrating achievements and looking forward to what is to come.?

? Emergency coverage planned –?many organisations shut down over the Christmas/New Year period, but it’s important to communicate this clearly and ensure that there are teams organised to cover any work that needs to happen during this time. Remember to show them some extra appreciation as they work through!

? Out of office message – clearly communicate the time you’ll be away from the office to your team and to any external parties. It helps to keep everyone in the loop, understand expectations and know who to turn to for answers.?

This checklist isn’t exhaustive, and none of these items are required, but it might just get you thinking on how you can build relationships with your team, with your clients and take the opportunity to connect at this time of the year.?

Have a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year –?enjoy time with friends, family and eating delicious food! Remember to find time to rest and reflect on the year that’s been.?
