Have you made it easier for your superiors to overburden with tasks?
This article will be very helpful to you in knowing all the cons of saying “yes” to whatever opportunity comes knocking on your door.
“It’s only by saying “no” that we can concentrate on the things that are really important”- Steve Jobs
I want you to know that it is okay to decline an opportunity
So, your co-worker has come up to you and is asking you to fill up one more report past your work hours, what do you do?
What we generally fall prey to when we say we are available for things and we really aren’t is fear. The fear of not being liked enough or fear of not making that promotion drives us to say “yes”. Therefore, here is some much-needed advice for you all to follow:
- Clearly state your limitations of time and resources to your team so that saying no at a later point in time would be easier.
- Negotiate for a deadline that is achievable for you if you do undertake the task in question.
- Saying a polite “no” by showing that you are thankful for the opportunity and giving them an alternative or a partial solution is also an option.
- Let them know the reason why you won’t be able to do the said task. There are chances that they will empathize and leave you be.
- Determine the urgency of the task and if the task can wait or even if someone else can take the responsibility instead of you.
