Leaders, It Isn't About You!

Leaders, It Isn't About You!

I won’t bring a lot of happiness with this perspective; however, I’m not selling ice cream, so….

I believe that a lot of people have completely forgotten the “do it because it matters and because it is important, regardless of who gets the credit” mantra … the true leadership ethos.

I am witnessing more and more people in leadership positions, who had a spotlight shined on them during an earlier point in their careers (which was a good thing) however, they haven’t pivoted yet where they realize it isn’t about them and started coaching others.

They have not yet accepted the true mantle of leadership; they have migrated from the camera pointed at them (by design) to the selfie leadership world because they are addicted to the attention versus their responsibilities and privilege of leadership!

It is about those that we have been entrusted to lead, motivate, and inspire. Regardless of this fact, some still believe that it is about them and they are relentless about ensuring the spotlight is on them.

My challenge questions for all of us to ponder and develop a deeper understanding of our motives:

?What are we providing that is of value to others and the organization?

?Why do we take the actions that we do? Is it for our story and glory, or is it for those we are responsible for?

?What do we complain about?

?What do we support, and do we support the positive culture of our organization, or only the things we value personally?

?Are we moving in the shadows to coach, develop, and highlight others?

?In that same coaching, are we also ensuring they know that at a specific point they will pivot and do the same, versus looking for the continued praise?

?Are you giving the organization options, or are you strictly looking for how it solely benefits you?

One of my favorite quotes from one of the best leaders I’ve ever served with, Ryan Richardson.

?Are you a professional?

??I think about this like professional sports coach. Yes, the coach will be at the pressers and in some of the spotlight; however, it is ALL about the athletes on the field / court. They are the ones that are endorsed, have the commercials, and the fans! You don’t see the coach out seeking for all the attention.

???Let’s be professionals in whatever profession we find ourselves in.
