Leaders are fearless

Some of the best leaders I have known, those who brought out the best in me were not just charismatic smooth talkers; often they were very ordinary people- but people who left their mark on me , or brought out the best in people around them .

They

  • Were brutally honest and critical when they felt I hadn’t given in my best. Yes, they would also show the way or help reflect on what I could have done better
  • Chose their battles well and knew when to stand for a cause and stand by you
  • Put people and organization interests far ahead of their own. It wasn’t the next big assignment or move one would see them maneuvering their way towards.
  • Inspired trust and respect by decisions they took and support they rendered.
  • Had a sense of security and confidence that didn’t require constant validation by populous moves

While striking a balance to productively collaborate and contribute in teams, true leaders are fearless in being how they are , what they stand for and creating sustainable value systems in individuals, teams and organizations .

Fearlessness- a virtue- usually comes in adversity. It comes from confronting trying situations, fear, uncertainty and surviving through these often emotionally grueling moments with victories or failures and developing resilience. It comes when you drive your passion to take well-meaning risks, even if that means that for a while you might be standing alone.

Leadership by hierarchy doesn’t last long.  Professionals hired into senior roles with a responsibility to build teams and organizations without having stood test of time in having developed their authentic fearless leadership styles often fail to inspire, build or retain teams. You’ll find them lost in a battle of making their existence felt or count and struggling to motivate troops towards their well thought out objectives.

Leaders single mindedly lead for the right causes rising above sense of fear and odds against them.
