Hi, my friend! Yes, everyone is my friend even if they do not know about that ??. You are reading the second edition of my newsletter. These newsletters are in the format of thought of the time + digest of articles about leadership in engineering teams and interviews with experienced engineers and leaders. Happy reading, watching, and listening ??!
Why I started writing articles
I graduated from a musical school with a major in violin. My second instrument was a guitar. And it was only when I learned to play guitar that I started to compose for guitar and violin.
Long before that, I was rocking in school with my rap songs. I still remember how at one gathering of parents and teachers, I put a boys' band and we sang my rap song composition "My Boss". I do not remember why I wrote that song and why I included into that song such phrases as "My boss drives Ferrari".
Similarly, it took me to switch positions and take many other leadership roles before I started writing here on LinkedIn. I have become more mature as a leader to start sharing something that would be valuable to others. It also was a realization that to grow as a leader I need to go public, be courageous to speak up about my vision and learn from the reflections of others.
There are hundreds of books and articles on leadership out there written by smart people and I am not trying to convince you that my way is better.
Oppositely, I am an engineer and scientist, experimenting with different leadership and communication styles, ways of working, and approaches. Then I publish on LinkedIn my observations to open discussions. It gives me an opportunity to reach people around the globe who are of different cultures and professional backgrounds and hear their opinions. I never believe in one truth, there are always different ways to look at things.
How and why I became a department head
I was on vacation when I saw the news there were organizational changes taking place in my department. According to that news, I was to be moved to a new department and have another manager. I was not excited about these prospects. Like every news, there are many sides to it. Another side was the establishment of new departments and the opening of vacancies there.
By that time, I was one of the lead engineers and was public and behind many initiatives and developments. With such leadership skills, it looked like the right time to move into managerial positions. And so I applied. I went through many tests and interviews including one with a psychologist evaluating my capabilities to be a leader. There were several pages of report produced as a result that described my profile.
With such positions, it is not just about tests and interviews, it is a lot about trust also. People in such positions have an immense responsibility to act ethically and be unbiased as they have the power to decide on hiring, firing, promoting salaries, and many other things. I am thankful to Evo Kessler for trusting me and giving me a ticket to my officially first management position.
