Leaders build SHIPs!

Leadership is about building SHIP(s)

"What do Leaders do?" is not a new or an easy question. Many have tried to answer through their own experiences, life philosophies, views, theories and imaginations. Text books are replete with definitions, the most common being "The art of achieving common goals through influence."

We also know leadership as a process, as a skill and as a trait. From the Great Man theory to Hersey and Blanchard's theory of Situational leadership, we have learnt that Leadership is both, an art and a science.

Recently, I came across an interesting answer to the question - What do Leaders do?

Leaders build SHIPS! I love Seas and hence this answer caught my attention! And very soon in the discussion I realised that this art of building SHIPs is a very fascinating one.

  • PartnerSHIPS - We know leaders need partners to accomplish anything meaningful and impactful. And there could be partners of all types, diverse in thought, deeds and backgrounds, who can add to the journey in the agreed direction. This is not necessarily easy for those who have been used to doing things on their own.
  • OwnerSHIPS - Leaders build a sense of ownership amongst those whom they lead through continuous empowerment, autonomy, clear communication and generous recognition. Without this, they often find themselves alone, and during most difficult times. Those who believe they are 'Masters' often fail in building this ship.
  • MentorSHIPS - Leadership and Mentorship are synonymous. Infact, this is the secret that draws the followers and inspire them to give their heart and soul. Passing the wisdom, helping the team members learn from your experiences and making them feel like leaders to what this SHIP is all about. Those who are 'stingy' with their knowledge and experience don't do this well.
  • RelationSHIPS - I believe leadership is about two mutually complementing Rs - RESULTS & RELATIONSHIPS; the operating word is 'And'. One without the other cannot lead to long term, sustainable performance. Building trust based relationships and then nurturing them with consistent attention and care are the hallmarks of great leaders. Those with 'People as Resources' philosophy find themselves wanting in this experince of building relationships.

So, ask yourself and other leaders you work with - Which SHIP have you built today? And will it sail long enough not only for us to reach our destination but also to make the journey in 'high seas' exciting and fun to remember?

Thanks VJ. Profound thought and quite relevant in the current scenario of effective LeaderSHIP. Adding ChampionSHIP where the leaders exhibiting the SHIP characteristics emerge as 'Champions'!
