A Leader’s Actions Often Teach Better Than Their Words
Whether you’re an intern just starting out or a seasoned leader, our actions matter. When we talk about leadership, we often talk about the lessons and guidance we can impart to others through coaching and meaningful feedback. While those conversations certainly do help others to grow, develop and reach their potential, it’s not the only way people learn.?
In reality, our actions, as leaders, have a meaningful impact on our teams. When we role model what we expect from others – accountability, compassion, respect, resilience – our teams learn so much more than they could through coaching alone. They see how those behaviors lead to results, emphasizing that how the work gets done is just as important as what’s achieved.
Role modeling can take many forms – big and small. It might mean rolling up your sleeves to help out during busy times, without judgement or criticism, to show your team how to support and help one another. It might mean holding your weekend thoughts until Monday morning to show that you value balance and taking time to recharge. It might mean simply saying good morning with a smile as you encounter your team members to show that being friendly can make a difference.?
Take a moment today to consider what actions you can take to show your team the right path forward. You might be surprised how even the smallest steps can have a positive ripple effect through the entire team. Remember, as a true leader, our power isn’t only in our position, role or knowledge but also in the way we care for and support others, enabling them to thrive.?
