As A Leader Why Should I Get Good At Understanding Change Including In Myself ?

At a recent talk on Leadership, one of the participants had this question, a very valid one: On why he needed to even begin to explore deeper within and look at changing himself. He was fine the way he was.

Of course Leadership is not for everyone, it is for those that have the desire to go out there and do more than what they are doing currently. In fact most of us are happy with the status quo and “manage” quite alright with it. We have learnt to put mechanisms in place to get by and be in a comfortable space. It is important to know that the true leaders are the ones that did challenge the status quo. They too could have been okay with being in a comfortable state. There may be several reasons for how and why they got out of that space either consciously or circumstance driven. Leadership development is about knowing that it is possible for everyone to be able to do this and that there is a methodical process of achieving it. How bad you want it and if your time has come depends entirely on you.

It is a destructive process, it requires you to deconstruct all you have accumulated as YOU, almost sort of destroy this beautiful castle, raise it to the ground and allow it to replace with a plain field which builds either an igloo, hut, a castle, a palace, a yurt, a house depending on every situation or person they come across. This doesn’t mean they change who they are, in fact it can only be possible if you shatter the illusions of who you are not.

The reason for this is that Leaders are faced with changing landscapes constantly. They have to make decisions, judgement calls, be exposed to different situations, scenarios and people. Once they master changing themselves at will, they are able to handle such situations better. This skill of being able to come out of the bondage of your own beliefs helps you learn to shift perspective in the right direction. It is not an easy process in the beginning, that is why we have fewer leaders than followers; but the truth is that this is the only way to continue developing as a Leader.
