Leader of what?
Yesterday I connected with a great young man, he truly has Big Visions and Big Purpose. He asked me a question, “Do you think all people have a mission, a purpose? I frequently hear that all humans are leaders. If there’s any truth to these two ideas, why aren’t circumstances even better?”
The answer to the first question is debatable, but personally I do believe we were put here for a purpose, we have a reason for being.
I don’t believe there’s any doubt about the second item: Yes, all of us are intended to lead. If nothing else, we are called to lead our own lives.
As to his 3rd item, the reason circumstances aren’t even better requires we ponder this question, “Do you believe the title Leader is necessarily positive?” (Refresh yourself with last week’s post: “Are you a True, Wanna-Be, or False Leader?” You will realize I don’t believe the title leader is necessarily positive…)
In that post I posited that our impact is the result of the type of leader we choose to be (yes, it is a choice). The type of leader we chose to be will ultimately determine whether…or not…we make a positive impact.
Since so many struggle to determine, “Impact on what?”, let’s begin to explore 5 Key Questions (FYI – these come from Chapter 1 of my book On Course: Become a Great Leader and Soar!):
1. As a society, are we on the cusp of a major breakthrough to heal those factors that divide us?
2. Are we as safe and secure as possible from threats to our health and way of life?
3. Are we making decisions that keep us on a bright path to greater prosperity?
4. Are we willing to testify to the value of everything we produce and the services we provide?
5. Are we soaring (that is, living truly fulfilling lives)?
Think about – ask me questions about – each of these. Where would you like to make the greatest impact?
We’ll continue to explore these questions – and how we (individually and collectively) might get to a strong yes on each of them; maybe someday on all of them…
Let’s commit to make a positive impact...today and everyday!
