The leader we wished we had

African leadership has transcended conventional political or traditional roles, now encompassing the art of inspiring and guiding individuals towards collective action for the greater good. It represents a dynamic and participatory process that involves seizing initiative, addressing challenges, and contributing positively to the well-being of communities.

With 60% of Africa's population under 25, a new generation of leaders is emerging to tackle pressing challenges like poverty, inequality, and educational inequity. These young voices exemplify the vast potential of Africa's youth to instigate transformative change, shaping not only their communities but also the continent at large. Among these inspiring leaders is Damilola Arotiba , a dedicated Project Lead at Building Paths Initiative , whose commitment and collaborative spirit contribute to the broader narrative of hope and progress in Africa.

From the interview with Damilola, we gain insights into how, as an African youth, she is reshaping the narrative within her community.

Initiatives and Impact:

Damilola shares details about the three impactful projects under the Building Paths Initiative:

  1. Project Real Talks: Aimed at educating young children on body safety and comprehensive sex education, it has reached over 800 children and trained 26 teachers. Positive feedback from schools, parents, and communities reflects increased awareness of body safety rules among primary school pupils.
  2. Project Book a Path: Focused on providing education equity, this project supplies learning materials, especially mathematics and English textbooks, to learners facing financial constraints. The provision of over 100 learning materials has led to improved attendance and heightened enthusiasm for learning.
  3. Project Unspot Her: Centred on educating girls in primary and secondary schools on menstrual health, this initiative also supports girls with menstrual materials. The project has seen a clear improvement in menstrual hygiene practices and increased confidence among schoolgirls, resulting in improved participation in educational activities. Project Unspot Her has donated 400 sanitary pads to girls in low-income communities.

Leadership Approach:

Damilola's leadership approach is deeply rooted in African values and traditions. As a Nigerian, she draws strength from her country’s rich culture and emphasises community, respect, and inclusiveness. Her leadership aims to foster a collaborative and supportive environment built on respect, valuing diversity, and appreciating the unique strengths of each team member.

Challenges and Resilience:

Challenges are viewed not as showstoppers, but as opportunities for growth. Damilola navigates difficulties with strategic planning, open communication, and a constant thirst for learning. Resilience is a cornerstone of her journey, as she remains committed to the goal, despite the triumphs and setbacks.

Leadership as a woman:

Navigating challenges as a woman striving to make a positive impact, Damilola expresses a profound sense of purpose and fulfilment. Her projects have touched lives, evident in the smiles and joy on the faces of the children. Despite challenges and obstacles, she remains committed to breaking barriers and serving as a catalyst for transformation. In her words, "I recognize the challenges and obstacles on this journey; tales of triumphs and setbacks. However, it is fulfilling to make a difference, challenge stereotypes and inspire women and girls to 'dream it and chase it."

Team Management:

Damilola ensures her team shares a common passion and interest in making a positive impact in their communities. Through encouragement of collaboration, communication, and support, she has created an environment where everyone comprehends the collective goal—to reach every child and ensure that no child is left behind.

Lessons Learned and Advice:

Damilola's experiences emphasize the significance of resilience, collaboration, and continuous learning. Her advice to young changemakers is clear: never forget your 'why,' be open to collaborations for opportunities to learn and grow, and never underestimate the impact you can make.

Global Context and Conclusion:

Damilola's work is not confined to local impact; it resonates within the broader context of youth leadership in Africa. As Africa's youth step forward to address shared challenges, initiatives like Building Paths become integral threads in the collective tapestry of continental progress.

In celebrating Damilola Arotiba's achievements, let us be inspired to support initiatives like Building Paths or embark on our endeavours for positive change. Her journey stands as a testament to the boundless potential of Africa's youth, weaving threads of hope and progress into the lives of vulnerable children. As we acknowledge her achievements, we are reminded that the future of Africa is bright, shaped by the hands of young leaders like Damilola and her team who dare to dream and build a better tomorrow.
