As a LEADER, here is what you can do.
Sunny R Gupta
Senior Director @JioStar (JioCinema/HotStar) | First Principles | Cloud Native | Scale | ex-Atlassian
If you're in a leadership position during the current crisis, you MUST act right away, do not wait for the situation to tide over or the worse to pass.
It is during these times that your team needs your full support. As an organisation, try to push back on new features to accommodate bandwidth for folks to take a break, handle situations at home.
Chances are, if you have a teammate in India, or with ties to India, they are affected directly or indirectly. The crisis is unfolding every day and highly unpredictable. Most startups & large corporations have mobilised efforts to handle the shortages of oxygen concentrators and supplies by diverting funds and manpower. We, as leaders still need to tackle the grim realities our employees face back home.
I am pushing back on avoidable feature requests and aligning delivery dates with reduced bandwidth in mind, supported by my organisation. Make sure to give ample time to every individual to recuperate any loses or take care of themselves or of those who depend on them. We are nothing without the team we build, make sure they are taken care of in every aspect.
We are nothing without the team we build, make sure they are taken care of in every aspect.
To my peer founders and co-founders, senior leadership in the Indian ecosystem today I request - Today is the time to highlight the balance in work-life balance that every company proudly boasts of. I'm glad to be at @Atlassian during this crisis, make sure your employees say the same about your org TODAY. If not, make changes immediately.
The most important part - communicate clearly and often. Research at Harvard Business Review has consistently shown employees feel comfort in knowing the priorities of the organisation and their leaders. This need is amplified during times of crisis, so make sure you send out a clear message to every stakeholder that you're there for them. Do not assume that they know it's okay to take breaks, tell them it is. Most employees often work under tremendous pressure to meet deadlines unless their leaders tell them it is okay to miss out during the crisis.
"This too shall pass" - is a strong statement used by many, the most important part is 'What are the leaders during while it happens?'
Let me know what your organisation is doing in the comments below...
