Dear @Leader,
Are you afflicted with ethical blindness? A recent study reveals that managers have a tendency to burden their most diligent employees with extra work without a second thought. If this sounds like you, take heart - you're not alone.
The concept of ethical blindness refers to the oversight or ignorance of the ethical consequences of one's actions or decisions. While this may not be intentional, it can have serious repercussions for both the organization and the employees involved. In fact, overloading employees can result in stress, burnout, reduced productivity, and even negative effects on their health and well-being.
From an American study based on responses from more than 1,400 managers clearly shows how loyal employees are asked to take on extra work without compensation. The tendency stems from a concept called ethical blindness.
As a manager, you may believe that assigning additional tasks to a hardworking employee shows appreciation for their dedication and commitment. However, this can often lead to frustration, a sense of injustice, and a degraded work culture.
The phenomenon of "presenteeism"
Managers can also overlook the ethical implications of overburdening their employees, resulting in the phenomenon of "presenteeism" where employees work long hours and take on more responsibilities than they should, even if they're sick or unwell.
So, how can you avoid ethical blindness? It starts with being aware of the ethical consequences of your decisions and showing understanding for your employees' workload and well-being. It's important to strike a balance between giving your employees freedom and flexibility while also being in touch with their needs. This means avoiding micro-management while keeping a close eye on the bigger picture.
