Leader: The Chicken or the Egg?

As most of us know, leadership is a complex concept that transcends titles and the formality of positions…we don’t have to have a leadership title to provide leadership in our actions.
Leadership Action:
Genuine leadership stems from a person’s actions, influence, impact, and inspiration.
Leadership is not confined to specific titles or positions, although many in leadership positions seem to believe, sadly, that they are anointed to make decisions that benefit themselves the most due to their positions.
True leaders see their jobs as creating more leaders, not more followers.
Effective leaders do not try to make themselves look good by trying to make others look bad (refer to today’s current political climate).
Anyone can embody leadership qualities, regardless of their formal role within an organization …one does not have to have a leadership title to enact leading positive actions, influence, impact, and inspiration.
Leadership titles often follow positive leadership actions…people EARN positions of leadership.

Leadership Title:
A leadership title (CEO, CFO, COO, Executive Director, etc.) is a designation generally assigned to members of the executive or management team within a public or private sector organization.
Such leadership titles often define what that person does and are part of the company’s organizational chart/hierarchy, and usually establish the formal chain of command within that organization.
Essentially, leadership action should come well before someone has the title “leader” bestowed upon them. Genuine or authentic leadership is about making a positive impact, regardless of the title one holds. Titles may follow, but true leadership is demonstrated through behavior, decisions, and inspiring others to achieve common goals. True leaders lead their team(s) to successes.

If we cannot be a genuine leader, we need to get out of the way and support a person who CAN be.
