Lead Your Passion; Don't Follow It

You see it everywhere. Advice to follow your heart, your dreams, and your passion. But, unfortunately, this advice does not work out very well for the majority of people who attempt to follow it. An unfortunate consequence of such failures to monetize one's passions is that people become cynical about passion having any kind of connection to the work they do for their living.
The truth is that passion is incredibly important to engagement with one's work and becoming great at what you do. So, where's the disconnect?
The error here isn't trying to connect your passion to your work; it's following a passion where your focus is all about your own enjoyment, rather than leading your passion to where you're inspired and motivated to create value for others through the products and services involved in your work.
To lead your passion you first must discover which of your passions are suitable for making your living. I call this finding your set of vocational passions. Getting clear on your vocational passions is the magic sought by everyone who is seeking to love and be inspired by their work, and to optimize the value they create for themselves and others.
