To Lead or Not to Lead...

I actively engage with users to understand their needs while championing cross-team collaboration—orchestrating the journey of turning promising ideas into impactful solutions.
In the past few weeks, the word leadership has come up many times. I had conversations with colleagues, my mentor, another leadership team member, our company’s CEO, and so on. From these conversations, and even some self reflection, I’ve come to an understanding of some of what leadership is and some of what leadership is not. The following is my understanding and is personal to me. Others can and may interpret it differently or the same.
WHAT LEADERSHIP IS NOT:
- Leadership is not just one single action or behavior.
- Leadership should not be a push and pull type of relationship.
- Leader is not demanding people what to do.
- Leadership is not doing everything yourself either.
- Leadership is not about having all the control.
WHAT LEADERSHIP IS:
- Leadership comes in many forms.
- Leadership is a “nudge” rather than a push and pull. The nudge is the small thing you do to motivate people to want to do what they are doing
- Don't focus on being in power, but rather focus on being empowered to empower others.
- Leadership can be about controlling a situation, but should not be about controlling others.
- Leadership entails the ability to influence others to follow
- Leadership entails the ability to influence others to lead
- A good leader is also a good follower. Are you able to read your surroundings and follow along with the vibe that those you are trying to lead are giving you?
- As a leader, are you willing and able to accept and apply reasonable feedback
- As a leader, are you willing able to provide feedback in such a way that it is valuable and aimed at helping those you are leading to grow?
I love hearing what others think about it as well!
