Lead to transform: Don’t underestimate what it takes to make change happen!

“We always overestimate the change that will occur in the next two years and underestimate the change that will occur in the next ten. Don’t let yourself be lulled into inaction.”

― Bill Gates

Bipedalism, language, the use of fire, agriculture, industry, the internet… among others were big changes human beings adapted to. And a year ago, the last big change: wear a mask, live in confinement, unable to travel or see our families, and more!

There is no doubt that the ability to adapt is intrinsic to human beings and key to the survival of our species. We are fast, very fast, at adapting to the circumstances.

When an external input moves us, we change. But… What happens with the changes that are motivated by our own aspirations? Then it’s not so easy…

As human beings, it is very difficult for us to work on those profound things that will lead us to be the best version of ourselves.

To be a person who leads change, you have to be one step ahead. So, if you want to invite your team to dive 10 meters underwater, you first need to experience what it’s like to dive down to 100 meters yourself.?

Let’s take ourselves to the next level, and to make change easier let’s identify what kind of change we are facing to decide the best action plan.

Powerful question to ask yourself:

What would be the downside of simply asking for support?

Make change happen:

Now it’s time to identify what type of change you are facing:

1. You heard about it, understood it and believe you are capable.

2. You understand the concept, but this is going to take time and practice.

3. All from number 2 + You are going to need help, and the first thing you need to do is ask for it!

4. Study again (“go back to school”) to acquire new knowledge.

You probably think you may be in 1 or 2 and that you are on your way… but then, why has it been years?. Yes, this is a cognitive bias, also called the Lake Wobegon effect, that makes us think we are better than average. So, I invite you to rethink this carefully and know that whatever assessment you do, you always have to assume that you should start from the next level. That is the best shortcut to make change happen!

Once you get there, start testing and experimenting. No matter what, remember that we learn from everything, even from what doesn’t work.
