Lead on Purpose with James Laughlin and Hila Oren

My childhood friend Dr Hila Oren is the CEO of the The Tel Aviv Foundation and the creator of Tel Aviv Global - yes, she's done a lot of amazing things for Israel.

But what I remember about her the most from when we were in high-school was her warm and friendly manner. What I'm always talking about - people with good vibes.

She shares her powerful tips for leadership in her podcast with James Laughlin called: Revolutionary Leadership - Transforming Cities and Minds from Within

Before we get into that, her huge contribution to the city of Tel Aviv beyond all the tech and international recognition - are these special public spaces that are designed for connection. She did this because she understood the need to share our experiences and values with others. When walking through these furnished areas that have wooden tables, chairs and benches, trees and shade, you can feel all the thought and caring that was put into creating these vibrant urban spaces - where anyone can come to connect with their friends, colleagues, or relatives. It's so convenient and comfortable, and no one is rushing anywhere.

Her Purpose

One of Israel's most sought after speakers abroad, Dr Hila Oren forms public-private partnerships aligned with the vision of the Tel Aviv Mayor and the Tel Aviv Yafo Municipality . She is passionate about innovative practices and programs that fuel urban development and positively impact the lives of citizens.

Lead on Purpose Podcast

What Hila is really passionate about is taking everyone on their path to their wellbeing. "We all want to enjoy the world and be healthy."

So many great points about leadership were conveyed in her podcast with James Laughlin .

Here are my favorite parts -

  • How her 'leadership training' in Israel started in the youth movements she was involved with and her two year mandatory army service.
  • The things she recommended such as being careful who you choose to take on the journey with you. And when you feel something is not right - stop and see what it is.
  • Instead of dispersing like other municipal teams during the pandemic, she gathered her people and they doubled-down on their mission of raising funding for Tel Aviv - and they ended up doubling their funding!
  • Proof of her belief that it's always best to not only do what you're supposed to do - but rather the right thing to do. She calls this "cracking the code," so that "things will really happen."
  • She's a big believer of having supporting circles, the key to making anything possible. "The circle makes you feel more courageous."
  • Listen to the people around you and the residents, and especially your gut.
  • Don't be afraid to fail, you can always re-navigate your course.

More Highlights

The cherry on the cake was when James asked her what type of leadership we need.

She spoke about the importance of decisions being made by a combination of both genders, and to also include input from young people.

Really important tips for what to with what's decided -

1) Don’t stick to old policies.

2) Using the resources for the benefit of all.

3) Sharing the fruits of success with all.

4) Constantly challenge yourself.

5) As the leader you don't have all the answers. Look and ask for suggestions.
