Lead with Impact: How to Build Emotional Intelligence for Success

Business owners are rarely mindful of their role as leaders in their businesses. Even if they are aware of the role, taking on the stewardship can be daunting. This is all thanks to the Hero worship culture and the hype on leadership in Social media.??

Leadership is more than just strategy and execution.

It’s about people.

Then there is the Myth that emotional intelligence is something you’re born with.

And to lead people, you need emotional intelligence (EQ). So, a catch-22 situation.?

EQ is your ability to understand and manage emotions—your own and others.

It’s what separates great leaders from good ones.

So, let's first bust the myth - It’s a skill you can build.

Here’s how I’ve developed a sense of it after struggling with myself and situations. The bottom line is that you can, too. Also, thanks to my mentors and friends who helped me understand and whose feedback helped me evolve as a person.?

1. Self-Awareness

Great leadership starts with knowing yourself.

Recognize your emotional triggers.

How do you react under stress?

Self-awareness helps you manage your emotions instead of letting them control you.

Action Tip: Reflect daily.

Ask yourself: What went well today? What could I have handled better?

2. Empathy

This is tough. Tough to recognise but Empathy connects you to your team.

It’s about understanding their perspectives, motivations, and challenges.

When you show genuine care, people feel valued.

Action Tip: Practice active listening.

Put away distractions and focus fully on what the other person is saying.

3. Adaptability

Change is inevitable. Not everyone responds to it with a positive frame of mind.?

I have been fortunate to see some of my leaders respond flexibly to challenges and uncertainties. They don't fluster under pressure or pretend to be in control of the situations or all-knowing.?

They stay calm and guide their team through transitions.

Action Tip: Reframe challenges as opportunities to grow.

Ask yourself: What’s the lesson here?

4. Communication

Clear and compassionate communication is key.

Your words can inspire or discourage.

Make sure your messages are intentional and delivered with care.

Action Tip: Pause before responding.

Consider how your words will impact the other person.

5. Conflict Resolution

Conflict isn’t a bad thing—it’s an opportunity for growth.

Leaders with high EQ handle disputes with fairness and respect. My lesson from observing great leaders is dealing with contradictions is a great art.?

Action Tip: Focus on solutions, not blame.

Encourage open dialogue and collaboration.

Developing EQ takes time, be patient with yourself. It’s worth the effort.

Start with self-reflection.

Seek feedback from trusted colleagues and/or mentors.

And remember, every interaction is a chance to practice.

The more emotionally intelligent you become, the stronger your leadership will be.

Emotional intelligence isn’t just a skill; it’s your competitive edge.

Start working on it today, and watch your leadership evolve.

What’s one moment where emotional intelligence helped you as a leader?
