In 2016, we performed a survey of approximately 12,000 B2B technology buyers using our proprietary Lead CatalystTM software system. Our mission was to better understand the content habits and preferences of tech buyers across the United States. We used respondents who represented the actual dispersion data in all U.S. business occupations and then introduced ourselves as a “third-party researcher, looking to better understand how people learn about business technology”.
Starting with research data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics that identifies that there are 2.3 million IT professionals in the U.S. who have budget and purchase authority, what we found when we looked at the results of our proprietary research of this group was astonishing. Of those would-be technology buyers, 81% of those surveyed said they “Often” used false information to subscribe to “content”. This means that while you believe you’ve got a genuine lead, all you have right are their name and email address. This means f that no matter how careful you are about generating or buying a quality lead, you still may end up with very poor results, which include many false positives and bad data in general.
