Lead, Follow, or Get the AI Out of the Way!
As AI becomes an integral part of business, it’s no longer a question of whether to use it, but how to use it effectively. Business leaders, entrepreneurs, and influencers are already leveraging AI tools to gain a competitive edge—whether it’s through improving decision-making, enhancing customer experiences, or streamlining operations. But with this power comes the responsibility to lead with intention and integrity.
On my journey through the business world, I’ve learned many valuable lessons, but one piece of advice from a mentor has always stuck with me: "The day we start managing systems instead of people, we lose a lot of the connections that make business work." This advice came during a discussion about managing a sales pipeline, where the focus was shifting towards systems and away from the human relationships that drive sales success. It’s a lesson I’m reminded of constantly as we talk about AI and the human element that is central to leadership.
In today’s landscape, AI isn’t just a trend; it’s a business necessity. From Google's AI integrations to the countless tools available for generating ideas and optimizing processes, companies are already using AI to stay ahead. The challenge now is not in adoption but in leading the way forward responsibly. As leaders, we set the tone. Our approach to AI—whether we embrace it with clear purpose or use it haphazardly—will influence how our teams and peers use it.
AI offers immense potential, but it must be harnessed carefully. It’s a tool that can help you refine your strategy, enhance communication, and make smarter, data-driven decisions. However, it should never replace the human element that is central to leadership. Just as my mentor’s advice highlights, focusing solely on systems over people can erode the very connections that are crucial to success. The key is to integrate AI into your business in a way that complements your vision and values, not to let it overshadow them.
Business leaders must also be transparent about how they use AI. In an era where consumers and employees alike are more conscious of ethical practices, being upfront about your AI strategy builds trust and credibility. AI should amplify your strengths, not be a crutch or a means to cut corners. When used correctly, AI can make your business more efficient, your messaging more precise, and your strategies more effective.
