[Lead Better] What is a leader’s most powerful tool?
Yep… more important than asking powerful (insightful) questions.
It’s listening. Well, more than listening.
In a recent training I proclaimed it was empathic listening… but I want to revise that!
Empathy is only part of it. I now believe it is listening to understand.
Listening to Understand
Let’s unpack this
First, we have to care. About the person. About their challenge. About their unfolding. About the moment.
It’s a mini love affair.
It’s a deeper care than usual perfunctory information transfer.?
Second, we need to focus (and stay focused) on the person. Our mind can wander but we need to deliberately bring it back. Refocus our concentration back to them.
Focus is a psychological skill and can be trained. (Cue: mindfulness practices to chart deeper focus).
Third, go beyond the mechanical words being used; listen for the emotion they’re coming out from.
What’s actually going on for them? What’s the deeper emotional language they’re uttering?
In listening for understanding, you can’t understand until you get the completeness of it
So you also need element four: patience. Patience to allow completeness.
It all starts with care: a fundamental love of the human race
