The L&D Shift You Can't Ignore: From Content-First To Skills-First Learning | Death of the LMS
Imagine you’re having a conversation with a friend, telling them all about your weekend and…
??? Oi! Someone jumps in to interrupt.
You carry on the story and…
??? Oi! Again, someone shouts over the top, disrupting your chat.
Annoying right!? Well this is the way so many companies structure their L&D efforts.
They lead with the content, make learning feel like an unwanted interruption, and are surprised when it has no impact…
The problem with a content-first L&D strategy
Normally, it happens like this…
L&D has a piece of content ?? they shove it in someone’s face at a time that’s inconvenient for them ?? and say, take a look at this.
The learner’s baffled because it wasn’t relevant, they were working on something else, and so they just return to what they were doing.
L&D’s next move is often to return with more ‘fun’ and ‘interactive’ content, disturb those people again and, obviously, learning still feels like one big interruption.
? The content dictates what they learn, when they learn and where they learn it.
People don’t want more content, they want relevant skills
If the problem was a lack of content, people would be coming to you and saying it.
But they’re not! They’re either asking for more growth opportunities or help in building the skills that’ll help them do better in their career.
Ultimately, growth starts with building the skills people need to grow, and building those skills starts with relevant learning.
The mindset shift is this:
?? Instead of focusing on WHAT content they need and HOW I get it to them…
?? Focus on WHAT skills they need and HOW I help them build those.
Taking a skills-first approach to L&D
?? The rest of the business doesn’t care how many courses have been completed…
?? But they do care about the skills we’ve built, because this is the common language we all speak.
?? And our learners don’t really care about how many courses are on offer…
?? But they do care about the skills we’re going to help them build and progress.
And this changes the way we think about everything in L&D, as you’ll see in the image below.
As our CEO, Nelson Sivalingam, put it:
“When you start with skills, you’re now tailoring the entire learning experience to the skills the individual needs to grow in their career, rather than the content.”
