That is a question that was resolved in one of my most rewarding Team Interventions.
The new dominant Manager was causing upheaval in the Department and I was asked to intervene to move the unit to harmony and productivity.
“Sue” was identified as someone who was lazy and lacking in initiative. She just sat around when she had completed her specific assignments.
Inspired by the behavioural diagnostics that I had conducted on the team, I gently probed to learn more about “Sue” and the Manager’s view of her. “Sue” had what I term an SC Profile. That would suggest that there would have to be unusual circumstances for her to give the Manager just cause for her labelling of “Sue.” Behavioural assessments provide us with the basis and guide for asking questions.
As it turned out – amid tears – it emerged that “Sue” had gone about her work as she did prior to the Manager taking up the leadership role. She would undertake tasks and make decisions outside of her formal area of operation.
In one such incident the Manager admonished “Sue” for taking decisions that was not within her remit and made it clear that in the future she is to seek permission.
Features of the SC profile includes being submissive and compliant. “Sue” would ensure that she would not risk incurring the Manager’s wrath and would stay in her lane. She would do what is assigned. Being highly effective that often meant that she was left with nothing to do.
Using the extensive Extended DISC Team Maps and data this and other fundamental understandings were forged to produce a highly productive and tightly knit team.
I will be sharing insights from my decades of making teams more productive in a series of free webinars.
