Lazy-Girl Jobs are in Right Now.
The trend of "lazy-girl jobs" (not our term) is becoming increasingly popular, especially among young workers, predominantly women, who prioritize work-life balance over the traditional hustle culture. This term refers to remote positions that offer competitive pay with minimal effort and passion required. These sought-after jobs typically conclude at 5 p.m., feature a laid-back boss, and provide an annual income ranging from $60,000 to $80,000—sufficient for a comfortable young-adult lifestyle without the necessity for overtime. While critics argue that this trend may not encourage career ambition, advocates contend that it enables individuals to maintain a healthy work-life balance.
Victoria Bilodeau, for example, transitioned from a demanding environmental technician role to a three-hour-a-day position as a freelance digital marketer. This shift has allowed her more free time and a less stressful lifestyle. Many consider this move a smart choice for achieving work-life balance, and Victoria coined the phrase a "lazy-girl job." On social media, women are sharing their similar experiences using the hashtag #lazygirljob, showcasing jobs such as "digital marketing associate" and "office administrator" as fitting well into this lifestyle.
At 23 years old, Bilodeau shares that she previously worked 10-hour days as an environmental technician, involved in cleaning up low-level radioactive dirt for $26 an hour. In her current role, she spends about three hours a day promoting makeup and skincare products online. Although her income is now lower, the increased free time allows her to engage in activities like exercise, meditation, and spending quality moments with her cats, Jinx and Fang. Sharing expenses with her boyfriend in Belleville, Ontario, also helps alleviate financial pressures.

This trend has garnered notable traction on platforms like TikTok, featuring videos showcasing individuals thriving in laid-back work settings. The "lazy-girl job" concept signifies a broader change among young adults redefining the work-life boundary in the post-pandemic era. This shift stands in contrast to the previous "lean in" philosophy and aligns with various girl-themed trends, including "girlboss," which blends self-deprecation with aspirations. While it's a desirable arrangement and a great job if you can get it. However, I caution and advise against adopting it as a career plan.

1 年Interestingly, some individuals misinterpret this post and the #Lazygirl job as being related to workplace shaming, allegedly coined by executives, and gender demeaning. In reality, this hashtag was coined by a woman describing her job situation. It went viral because other women resonated with the concept. This post focuses on a shift in views and the practicality of job seeking and career planning.

1 年"Lazygirl" job is another workplace "shame" for women. Wherever it originated, its harmful to the psyche of women. Women, who still make 85 cents to the man's dollar; who not only (1) literally produce families, but (2) financially support them (4-legged and 2-legged families) more today than in years past, and (3) have fewer rights over their own bodies than their own mothers did. I say we rename this hashtag to "lazy-old-[white]-men" jobs and look at our elected representatives' work-llfe balance. Victoria is fortunate and doing all she's been taught. I wholeheartedly agree that opportunities like Victoria are few and far between, but criticizing those who find this is sour grapes. Good for you, Victoria. Enjoy it while you can. And thank you, Tiffany, for reminding us that the demand far outweighs the supply of #lowmjobs

1 年Experts agree that pursuing a lazy-girl job is the wrong way to build a meaningful career. Despite this, numerous young women have labeled themselves as "lazy girls" and claim that they are not lazy but rather smart.
