This question has plagued the marketing world since the beginning of time. If you are a copywriter or marketer you probably know exactly what question I am talking about…

The dreaded “to work in a niche or not to work in a niche question.” Today I’m going to tell you exactly why you should choose to work in a niche… and why it’s a bad idea not to.?

Just like it was a bad idea for my son Sawyer to try to catch the Easter Bunny last night. It was 4:00 A.M. in the morning. I was letting our chocolate lab Rolly outside to go potty.?

This was nothing new. Rolly got me up every morning around 4:00 A.M. I normally let him out to go potty. Then we go back to bed. As we were walking by the stairs in the kitchen to let Rolly out I heard a crashing noise. I looked up just in time to see my son Sawyer running down the stairs at full speed.?


Rolling Down The Stairs Behind Sawyer Was Our Garbage Can?


He had been crouching behind it. Have you ever heard a garbage can go crashing down the stairs at 4:00 A.M.? It’s incredibly loud!?

Rolly and I were both looking to take cover… until I saw Sawyer.?

Now the Easter Bunny is a magical creature that seems to always know when someone is trying to catch him. Let’s just say that Sawyer had to search for his Easter basket for a while.?

The consequence for copywriters that choose not to work in a niche is exactly the same as Saywer’s. They are going to be searching for clients for a while.??

In my two years of copywriting, I’ve noticed that many copywriters are overly concerned with market size. They feel like approaching a narrower market or a niche is counterproductive.?

The thing is getting hired is not a lottery. It’s not about how many tickets you are holding. It’s about someone believing that you are the best option for their company.?

Getting hired as a copywriter is like a lottery in one way though. It’s a winner take all type of game. Coming in second is no better than coming in dead last.?


The Secret To Winning As A Copywriter Is To Make Sure That Your Writing Is Close To The Revenue?


You accomplish this by working for businesses that are in the same niche. Use these four principles to pick a niche where your writing will be close to the revenue:


  1. The marketing directors are easy to contact. This is why I love LinkedIn. Usually, if you can find them on LinkedIn they are fairly easy to contact. Now if they are movie stars they probably have a lot of gatekeepers and security. Those guys are hard to contact. But a marketing director on LinkedIn? Easy as pie! And I love pie!?
  2. They speak the same lingo. You want to be able to leverage your persuasion arguments, your persuasion writing, information, and proposals. You don’t want to be jumping back and forth speaking all different kinds of languages and lingos. As a writer, the more specific you get the more persuasive you are. It’s hard to be specific when you’re speaking multiple lingos.?
  3. They are using the same kind of writing that you are selling. Certain niches use certain kinds of copywriting. You need to make sure that the copywriting they use and what you want to write match up. For example, if you want to work in the financial niche but you don’t want to write sales letters then things are not going to work out too well for you. The primary type of copy in the financial niche is sales letters.?
  4. The businesses actually have money to spend. If you are in the copywriting business to make money… then the companies that you work for have to have money to spend on your copywriting. This one is easy. Don’t overcomplicate it.?


Here’s The Real Deal


It makes no difference how large the market is. Whether there are 5,000 potential clients or five million. Either way, you are only going to work for a teeny, tiny slice of the market.?

Expanding the size of your market in theory might sound like it’s going to bring you a lot of writing wealth, but it won’t. Narrowing your focus to a fun and profitable niche, on the other hand, will. It puts your writing close to the revenue.?

You can make sure that you’re writing is close to the revenue in a niche if the marketing directors are easy to get ahold of, they speak the same social lingo, use the same kind of writing that you are selling, and the businesses have money to spend.?
