ABC Vs XYZ Analysis

LAYOUT: Part Analysis

While designing the LAYOUT for ASSEMBLY LINE or WAREHOUSE, we have to deal with the dynamic mix of the PARTS.

While placing the PARTS at the required location, the proper classification of the PARTS is to be done.

At SHD we follow the simple PFD to design the storage at LINE-SIDE, SUPER MARKET, WARE HOUSE, and many other places.

There are several approaches to the PART Analysis, few of them are:

  • ABC Analysis: Like a savvy chef prioritizing ingredients, ABC analysis categorizes items based on their demand and value. The most frequently requested parts (the “A” items) get special attention during the put-away and picking processes. Meanwhile, the “B” and “C” items receive proportionate focus.
  • XYZ Analysis: This one’s like predicting the weather—well, sort of. XYZ analysis considers the predictability of demand. “X” items are steady and predictable (like your morning coffee), “Y” items have moderate variability, and “Z” items are wild cards (think seasonal products or sudden spikes in demand).

SHD PROCESS

To divide the PARTS into different categories, first do the classification based on:

  • Physical Properties: LWH, Weight, Material
  • Packaging Information: Type, Size
  • Manufacturing Strategy: In-house or Outsourced, Wash or No-wash, Bought-out/Proprietary, Received as part or sub-assembly, etc.
  • Sourcing: Local, Domestic, Imported, etc.

Then divide the PARTS into A, B, and C categories based on:

  • Type
  • Value
  • Weight

This analysis is useful for designing the primary and secondary storage containers.
