Layoff, Downsize, Re-allocation (of you) or whatever they're calling it these days, it's still no fun when it happens to you.
I just heard about another layoff yesterday (Novo this time) and if you were affected, I'm sorry but I can honestly say I know how you feel and this happens every year and this TIME of year. This is one of 5 companies that I know of laying off, this year.
I was in your shoes 9 years ago and literally 2 days after the layoff, I learned about this really unique technology. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE what I do! The ahh ha moment for me came when I went to my own doctor and he wrote me a prescription that I recommended or "influenced" him to write several years ago when I was working for big Pharma. Then the lightbulb went off...every time he wrote a prescription for me as a pharmaceutical rep, I got the short term win (a nice salary) but my pharmaceutical company got the residual component (the bigger income and longer lasting income) every time he wrote a prescription for that drug. With what I do now, I make the residual and it's an asset I can will to my children that I'm building. I figure why not leverage the skill set I've acquired and leverage the relationships I've built to build something that can't be taken out from under me again?
