Laying Solid Foundations for the Human Work

Laying Solid Foundations for the Human Work

Yesterday’s article was an announcement to have you?please subscribe to the new series called “Psychological Safety Fundamentals” series which will be published every Thursday here on the PeopleNotTech.com website and it is based on the structure in my “People Before Tech: The Importance of Psychological Safety and Teamwork in the Digital Age” book.

If you care about the concept, if you have seen the light as to how important it is and related with the topic, if you want to make a change and see your team highly performant as they shake the fears and the things that hold them back from doing their best work, if you want to see them stay and be happy, then come join us as we go through definitions, components, barriers, types of behaviours, clear misconceptions, show the numbers that help the business care and much more. The two newsletters here will continue as usual and will attack the nuances and intricacies of the topic without referring back to basics all the time.

Today’s video gives you a bit of background as to why we decided to write it. Hint: it’s because there’s a real need for ensuring all the fundamentals of this wonderfully transformational and yet very complex human group dynamic - psychological safety- are crystal clear to everyone. Only then can we hope that it will start making a difference at scale.?

Over the next few months on the series, the equivalent of a full Psychological Safety 101 course or some proprietary extensive certification for free. All we ask is that you care enough to learn and use it.

Psychological Safety is not one of the fluffy concepts we can have an occasional brush with then carry on. You can’t “unsee it”. It’s not a turn of phrase, it’s not a nice to have, it’s not a once-and-done topic and it’s not easy to either acquire or retain but it is THE most important thing we owe our team and implicitly owe our organisation if we want to succeed.?

While we have said time and again that Psychological Safety is not something that can be affected by merely knowing about it and having taken a course or listening to a Ted talk will not magically make your team safer and therefore performant, awareness and intimate understanding of the concept is a sine qua non condition to doing anything about it.?

With very few notable exceptions, every organisation experiences resistance to doing the human work. Some of it is outrageous and needs to be called out and annihilated if it comes from hefty amounts of HumanDebt and the lack of care the organisation displays, and some of it is less maleficent when at a team level, a human level, we encounter the resistance of people who do not believe they are entitled to a happy work life. They don’t demand the respect of working in groups where they can be free, authentic and open and they can’t bring themselves to believe that the same organisation that did nothing but stand in their way, ignored or punished them before, is now wanting what’s best and recognising that they are humans with emotions so they are making room for the people work.?

Both types of resistance can be overcome with enough education. We strongly believe that. It’s why we designed the “Did you know?” feature in the software and why we launched the “Fundamentals of Psychological Safety” series yesterday. Because who, in their right mind, knowing what it is, how astoundingly important, how incredibly useful and how deeply needed it is would shy away from the work to get more of it?
