LAWYERS: SMILING TO HIDE DEPRESSION
Pamela DeNeuve
Because THRIVING in law isn’t just about long hours—it’s about strategic focus, strong well-being, and celebrating each milestone
Lawyers have you ever felt:
Do you force yourself to smile and maintain an external fa?ade, as a defense mechanism?
No matter what you feel it is your duty to hide true feelings,
Sometimes you want to escape and experience suicidal ideations.
Then you are suffering from
SMILING DEPRESSION!!!
Smiling Depression often goes undetected. Those suffering often discount their feelings and brush them aside, especially if they're getting through their daily lives with a smile.
Many lawyers are unaware of their depression. As an attorney, they certainly don't want to acknowledge their symptoms of depression because of a fear of being considered "weak."
MEET GEORGE
George is a big-time lawyer with over 15 years of experience. Everyone sees his success; he appears to be a loving husband and father to two beautiful daughters. But something was missing behind those smiles.
When George came to me, he said,
“Pamela, I look as if I have it all. I have a perfect job, a beautiful wife, and lovely daughters. I take my medication; drink a couple of cups of coffee for energy just to get out of the door, looking forward to having a great day in the office.
I always fix a smile on my face and then head to Starbucks for a strong dose of caffeine. When I arrive at work, my smile is pasted on my face but inside I feel like I am dying inside.”
George looking puzzled and sad said,
“I close my door and bury myself in my work, billing as much as I can to make myself feel somehow worthwhile. I feel like an inadequate human being.
Despite these painful inner dialogues, I keep smiling but still wonder why I am so unhappy because I have every reason to be happy.”
During our coaching calls, George was able to:
1.????Discover why he is depressed.
2.????Understanding the underlying reasons for his depression.
3.????Learn why taking medication and therapy had not stopped his depression.

4.????Find inner joy and peace he had lost during early childhood.
5.????Become his real self and stop smiling as a cover-up.
6.????Become happy and enthusiastic with a lot to look forward to
In the United States, one out of every ten
individuals suffers from depression.
In the ranks of the legal profession, however, the rate of depression increases. One out of
every four attorneys is depressed.
