Lawyers: Remember Your Oath to Help Your Fellow Man

To My Fellow Members of the Bar – We are leaders. We are negotiators. We are lawyers.

As we all come to terms with the new temporary societal norms across our country as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is important to remember our oath about what it means to be a lawyer within the communities we serve.

Although we do not yet fully know what to expect in the days, weeks and even months ahead of us, it is it our time as attorneys to be proactive, help our fellow men, women and children and continue to act with the utmost ethics and professionalism within our communities.

As lawyers, we have a responsibilities to help lead our communities, to be the voice of reason and to help those in need. I challenge all attorney that I know and do not know to be proactive in the future days ahead. After you have established safety for your family, loved ones, and office staff begin the day by contacting all of your clients and former clients to ensure they are okay. Ask them how they are doing and if there is anything you can do to help them. Even just a few minutes of your time to see how all of your clients are doing is an obligation which you owe to them. Expand your practice area to help those in need, add more pro bono services to your practice, if people ask for help – give it, if people need information – provide it.

Remember that one of the tenets to the oath of being an attorney is being a community leader. Now is the time to zealously fulfill your oath, so step it up be active within your community.
