??? “I’m still standing…And did you think this fool could never win? Well look at me, I'm coming back again. Don't you know I'm still standing better than I ever did. Looking like a true survivor…”?
One of Elton John’s most popular songs is about making it through all the troubles of life without falling down. It’s a song that not only admits that tough times come but one that revels in the fact that those who make it through the other side come out stronger.
I’m not going to resist the urge to write about the strength of a people who simply want to be free, who are showing us daily, that they are still standing better than they ever did, looking like a true survivor in the tyrannical face of a war mongering super power.?

We’ve all suffered adversity in our lives, in our own hearts or in the heart of a nation.?More than ever, we need each other, we need community and now ask yourself, how do I stand tall, take a stand, to be outstanding? Branding. This is an often misunderstood concept. Sometimes it is equated with simply pretty design, logos, font, and color scheme.?
I’ll suggest it is much, much more than that. The visual feast is an important part but not all and certainly not the starting point.?
Your brand is how you stand out, how you are outstanding, and how you show up so people will know you, like you, and trust you enough to connect.?
How Do You Stand Tall??
With a sense of pride in knowing yourself first. Your pretty, your ugly, your weakness, and your strength. Take pride and draw from this whole of you. There aren't many things we can assert with certainty, but this is one. There's only one you with your story.
Recognize this and be the holistic you that makes you human, more relatable to others, and shows a confidence well enough to stand tall. I am what I am type of comfort. That’s magnetic!?
How Do You Take a Stand?
I don’t know about you, but when I departed the safety net of law school and dove into the overwhelming world of job hunting, billable hours, and a competitive environment, I played the accomodation card. In interviews, board rooms, situation rooms, negotiations, it was all about taking a stand for another (generally.) My own stand whether in agreement or otherwise (often) was (too) often irrelevant (in the for-profit sector at least.) Stifling.
I've since learned, there are ways to take a stand on questions you feel strongly about which serve to enhance your professionalism.
I've since learned, that within the sweet intersection of?personal and professional is precisely where I see the very best growth results for my lawyer clients. Every. Single. Time.
I've since learned, that there is a perceived fear of bringing “too much” personality or personal into the professional sphere. I get it, and this is where I work closely with my clients to establish where that line is drawn, and it varies. What I’m talking about is giving your professional self a real, relatable, and very human personality - that only you have.?
Among 1.33 million lawyers in the US, client types of people have choices. One of the most important ways you can stand out in that sea of sameness? Take a stand on something dear to your heart, close to your passion and stand by it. This is not the advice I’d have given myself back in the day, as a young lawyer.
I've since learned, that you never stop learning. You?
How Are You Outstanding?
Once you’ve figured out that personal and personable presence, you’re primed for outstanding.
You do you, you stand out by being the you only you do, so others see it, feel it, and trust it.
This is outstanding.
In this spirit of finding the outstanding, I have a fantastic, and very outstanding guest on my next Lawyers Power Hour show, Thursday March 24, 9am pst.
She’s a branding professional, energetic entrepreneur, and a dear friend.
Karin Hagg?rd operates her business Haggard Design (https://khaggarddesign.com/) with eloquence and impact for professional service providers including financial advisors and lawyers, awaiting her magic touch on their online branding, and positioning.?
I’m feeling kinda lucky she was able to carve out some time for us to share a few very actionable pieces of insight on how to establish and implement your own brand.?
And if you have questions about how to find your perfect, unique blend of online presence, I think I know someone who would be more than happy to have a quick call to explore and get you on track if this particular feature is one that could benefit your practice. ??
But either way, I’m happy we’re connected, and engaging in this Newsletter, on LinkedIn...
And, if you’d like to meet in a three dimensional, live version kind of way,? join me on my next? “Lawyers Power Hour” on Thursday, MARCH 24, 9AM PST?
Best of all? It’s free, no billable hours sacrificed here. Format consists of one hour where I spend 40 minutes providing guidance on a particular LinkedIn topic focused on benefitting the legal industry, and about 20 minutes open to roundtable style Q&A. This is where you then have an opportunity to ask away with questions related to your particular practice!?
(CLICK ON THIS LINK ?- to join us on MARCH 24, 9AM PST and find out more. And, remember to click on the zoom link associated with the Event to register so you have access!)?
To you/r thriving practice,?

3 年I’m still standing….wow!
Brand designer & Business strategist for service-based business ? Building Brands w/ Greater Impact
3 年Viveca Hess, J.D. Integrity + Heart. I might sound easy but it takes more effort to do the right thing...(even when people aren't watching). So I guess simply making the effort to do all you do with integrity and heart. I had somebody laugh at me the other day when I suggested "you shouldn't do a membership to make more money, you should do it to provide a better service for your audience"... see the thing is, when you do it for the right reason, the money will come (not the other way around). Whatever you decide to do in a situation like that for example, that experience, that is what is your brand, then you create visuals that match with that ??
On sabbatical ...
3 年Viveca Hess, J.D. Looking forward to it. I'm registered. As for branding, it's a promise to customers. Choose what you want to be known for ... Then do it ... Full out!!
