Lawmakers are looking at the tax status

We’re ramping up our Don’t Tax My Credit Union campaign, launching the first digital ads targeted at key lawmakers reminding them of the importance of the credit union tax status.

This comes as the House Ways and Means Committee released a document seeking feedback on a comprehensive list of items that could fund government priorities.

The credit union tax status was included in the hundreds of potential “pay for” options, valued at $30 billion in the next 10 years. This wasn’t unexpected. We’ve been saying for months everything is on the menu and now we must work together to show how this so-called “cost” pales in comparison to the life-changing difference credit unions make for more than 140 million Americans.

Our Don’t Tax My Credit Union campaign includes a new consumer-facing website, as well as resources for credit unions. We’re asking you to use these resources—including ?the Member Activation Program, Project Zip Code, and National Advocacy Fund—and lay the groundwork of awareness so your members will engage with Congress when the time is right to activate our grassroots.

Our advocacy isn’t limited to Congress. The new administration and new officials taking office this week means new people in charge of executing its priorities.

I wrote to President Trump, reminding him that credit unions are the heart and soul of the American economy, and shared with his agency appointees how credit union priorities intersect with their policy areas.

Your direct outreach put a face to our concerns. As the tax discussions unfold, the ongoing efforts by league and credit union leaders to come to Washington, D.C., and share stories and data about the credit union difference with key lawmakers will make a big impact in this effort.

Kyle Hauptman named NCUA chairman

Congratulations to NCUA Board Chairman Kyle Hauptman, who was appointed this week. We sent a letter outlining a series of specific issues we hope to work on with the agency, many of which align with the chairman’s own priorities. Credit unions stand ready to work alongside Chairman Hauptman, the NCUA board, and agency staff to reexamine the regulatory landscape to better serve credit unions and their members.

Bill would change CFPB funding, structure

Rep. Andy Barr, R-Ky., introduced an America’s Credit Unions and Kentucky Credit Union League-supported bill that aligns with one of our policy priorities for the CFPB. It would transform the CFPB into an independent agency, the Consumer Financial Empowerment Agency, and place it under the appropriations process. We strongly support this bill, which would provide much-needed accountability to the bureau.?
