The Lawai Store: Honoring the Matsuura Family Legacy

In 2017, 7-Eleven Hawaii opened its doors in Lawai, Kauai, a location deeply intertwined with the Matsuura family's history. More than half a century ago, Sakai and Masa Matsuura, inspired by their father's commitment to the Lawai community, leased land from a cannery and started their first general store, venturing into convenience retail. In 1970, they relocated and purchased the swampy land where 7-Eleven Hawaii stands today. This store quickly became the neighborhood's go-to grocery store, epitomizing community spirit.

Sakai's father's vision extended beyond commerce; he wanted Sakai to establish a post office in Lawai to serve the community. This post office, operational to this day, exemplifies the Matsuura family's dedication to their neighbors.

The "Matsuura Store" was more than just a business; it was the heart of the community. Open 365 days a year, they instilled trust and loyalty through an honor system where customers would record their debts on the wall. They offered various services, cashing checks for construction workers and ensuring customers could pick up packages even when the post office was closed.

The Matsuura brothers are commemorated with a permanent plaque installed at the Lawai store

One beloved tradition that Lawai residents and visitors cherish is the manju, a sweet treat perfected by Sakai Matsuura. Beyond manju, the store's offerings included bento, special preparations of SPAM? musubi, and other essential items, creating a strong bond with their customers.

In 2017, 7-Eleven Hawaii embraced the legacy of the Matsuura family, aiming to continue their tradition of community service and the sweet touch of manju. We are proud to continue to offer the traditional manju using the recipe from the Matsuura family, available in flavors such as guava, apple, and blueberry. We strive to be the "Matsuura Store" in Lawai, preserving the spirit of Masa and Sakai Matsuura, true pioneers of convenience, whose legacy of love for their customers will endure.
