Law of Vital Few & Trivial Many
“We all matter - maybe less than a lot but always more than none.” ―?John Green
The ‘Law of Vital Few & Trivial Many’ is commonly known as the Pareto Principle or the 80/20 rule. ?It was Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto who originally showed that approximately 80% of the land in the Kingdom of Italy?was owned by 20% of the population. Management Consultant Joseph M Juran?further developed the concept giving us the 'Pareto Principle'.? The law is a rule of thumb - period.? You won’t find any studies evaluating or justifying this rule.? And yet any amount of debunking will not shake your faith in it. So, let’s accept it as an outcome of mystical 'Con-Science' (Con(sultant)-Science)
Whether we love or hate the law we underestimate the extent to which our lives are intertwined with it. Your focus in life is to continue to be or become the vital few.? And yet let’s not forget the law says 80% of us will be amongst the trivial many! So how do you reconcile this dichotomy??
We live in a world of plurality.? We are a part of several groups at the same time.? Think of these groups as connecting different worlds with which you identify yourself with. In some (20%) of these groups you are the vital few and many others (80%) you may be amongst the trivial many.??

The set of groups defines who you are, where you operate, what do you identify with and where your aspirations lie! ?Once you hit the critical few in any group, you are looking for the next group that inspires you! You can only be in a certain number of groups at the same time! Remember the axiom that each one of us constantly evolves in our lives. How do we do that?? One way is by changing the groups that we are operating in. Remember when we go and meet our old friends? A common realization is that we now operate in different worlds. We never lose touch, but we learn to effortlessly slide across groups. But does this evolution ever end?
“We lie the loudest when we lie to ourselves.” ―?Eric Hoffer
The day you realize that you are the vital few in most groups that you identify with, you have either arrived in life or you are content in living the groups that you are a part of.? For the rest of mere mortals, let’s focus on enjoying the cycle of life as we continue to aspire to be the vital few!
Wow Navneet. Being part of your group is "Vital Few". Raising the bar everytime.????

8 个月Navneet Jhamb 1+1+2+3+5...you see these Fibonacci numbers ...oh oh not that Italian, the other one Pareto...these Italians I tell you infest science and maths. And economics and pizzas and art......I tell you 80% of Italians are Italian ...and the Greenlanders violate that damn principle...%100 yes %100 of them are Greenlanders... Damn neat article as always....and the bit about the groups was good...however a note of caution..we are used to gaming the system, any system.... So if I take the jhund principle to be: in your group if you are....then I hereby form 200 WhatsApp groups with just me and then I am KING!!! PS: tel , pray tell, in that leaning tower of 5 cats, why is just one cat at the bottom wearing a 'candlestick' hat on?? 20-80 again ??
