Property description: white acicular crystal. Melting point 44.2℃, boiling point 298.9℃ (13.3kPa), 176℃ (2kPa), 141-142℃ (8-9.3× 10-2kpa), relative density 0.8679 (50/4℃), refractive index 1.4304. Soluble in methanol, slightly soluble in acetone, petroleum ether and water. It smells of bay oil.
Production methods: Industrial production methods can be classified into two categories: one is obtained from natural vegetable oils by saponification or decomposition under high temperature and high pressure; The other is separation from synthetic fatty acids. In Japan, lauric acid is mainly made from coconut oil and palm kernel oil. Natural vegetable oils used to make dodecyl acid include coconut oil, litsea cubeba kernel oil, palm kernel oil, and pepper seed oil. Other plants, such as palm kernel oil, palm seed oil, camphor seed oil and other services can be made from dodecanoic acid. The remaining C12 fraction from the extraction of dodecanoic acid contains a large amount of dodecenoic acid, which can be hydrogenated at atmospheric pressure without catalyst and can be converted to dodecanoic acid with a conversion rate of more than 86%.
Use: dodecyl acid in the surfactant industry is the most widely used, according to the classification of surfactant, cationic, anionic, non-ionic and amphoteric type. Dodecyl acid series surfactants are listed in the attached table of this article. Some surfactants of dodecyl acid and dodecyl alcohol derivatives are also antiseptic, such as dodecyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride (germicide), dodecyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium bromide (neogermicide), dodecyl dimethyl (2-phenoxyethyl) ammonium bromide (domiphene). The dodecyl dimethyl ammonium -2, 4, 5-trichlorophenol salts in these derivatives can be used as citrus preservatives. Dodecanoic acid has many applications in plastic additives, food additives, spice industry and pharmaceutical industry.
