Laura’s Transformative Journey: Embracing Cybersecurity with Women4Cyber

The world of cybersecurity is a dynamic and ever-evolving field, where the demand for skilled professionals is constantly on the rise.?

However, for one individual, the journey into cybersecurity was more than a career choice; it was a transformative experience that reshaped her life and aspirations.

Meet Laura, who is part of the Women4Cyber Foundation mentoring program and a former Retail Shop Manager whose life took a remarkable turn.?

This time I felt compelled to share her story using her own words. Let’s discover Laura’s chronicles:

“I decided to start the Cybersecurity course with Women4Cyber after an event in my life that changed my entire perspective on life and my career.

Last year, around this same time, I experienced burnout due to my job. The environment and the work were extremely toxic and abusive. I tried for years to push through it, but as you know, what you try to hide always comes to the surface eventually. Since I wasn’t paying attention to how unhappy I was at work, my body made me understand it in the worst possible way. I had a major burnout that brought me down, in the darkest way. I had to stop working, and each time I tried to return, my body rejected it by triggering mental breakdowns and anxiety attacks during the day. I could barely eat or sleep. With help, I eventually began to heal, but I won’t lie—it wasn’t easy at all. I was lost and didn’t know what to do with my life as I stayed home recovering.

One day, I came across a post about Women for Cyber online, and I thought to myself, ‘That’s what I need, let’s give it a try.’ At first, I thought I would fail or hate it, but the more I explored and learned, the more certain I became that this was exactly what I wanted to do! On top of that, I was surrounded by women from diverse backgrounds, which made me realize that no matter what you've been through or where you come from if you're passionate about something, you can achieve it.

This course helped me when I was lost and thought my life was falling apart because of what had happened. But I was so wrong! Now, I just want to keep learning, developing new skills, and working in an environment that fosters growth and opportunity.

I've always been a self-learner and have taught myself everything. I'm very autodidactic, and I love learning and enriching myself through knowledge. However, this program has taught me how valuable it is to collaborate with others, share experiences, exchange skills, and explore new ways of learning.”

On October 15th, Laura obtained the Google Cybersecurity Professional Certificate, which is no small feat, especially when overcoming personal challenges like burnout.?
