Launching “The Unseen Battles”: A New 5-week Series for Entrepreneurs

This series was inspired by a post from a brilliant founder of a scaling company, reflecting on the rising tide of business closures and bankruptcies across Canada. The numbers tell a sobering story—business insolvencies have surged by 57% in the last year. For many, this isn’t just economic data; it’s an intensely personal struggle. Financial stress doesn’t disappear when you close the laptop for the night—it sits with you, often disrupting sleep. This is the reality for countless entrepreneurs today, and it deserves to be acknowledged.

Yet even in the face of these challenges, I’m an optimist. I believe that while these are tough times, they may also mark the beginning of something new. I don’t know what that next chapter looks like just yet, but I know that we’re in this together, like boats weathering the same storm on a vast ocean. That’s why I’m launching “The Unseen Battles,” a weekly blog series for entrepreneurs navigating the hidden challenges of building a business. Each week, I’ll address a specific unseen battle, offering insights, resources, and reflection points to help others face these challenges with strength and support.

The Real Work Behind the Highs

Entrepreneurship often brings to mind the thrill of pitching to investors, launching products, and watching ideas come to life. These high points are part of what draws people to entrepreneurship; they keep us motivated through tough times. But these highs are only one side of the journey.

Behind every public success is a series of unseen battles—like self-doubt, isolation, balancing life with work, timing decisions, and learning from failure—that test our resilience. These are the battles that don’t make headlines but that ultimately shape a founder’s path and build the adaptability needed to navigate this journey. Here’s an overview of what we’ll cover in this series.

The Battles We’ll Explore

1. The Battle with Self-Doubt and Isolation

Self-doubt is a nearly universal experience, but for entrepreneurs, it often feels magnified by the isolation of the role. Each decision can seem like it could make or break the business, and this pressure can become overwhelming when there’s no one else to share the weight. In moments like these, separating feelings from facts can be transformative. Gathering honest feedback from peers, grounding yourself in key data points, and recording small wins can shift self-doubt from a barrier to a checkpoint along the way.

Isolation often compounds self-doubt, especially for founders who may feel disconnected from support networks. Next week, I’ll share strategies to combat these challenges, from tools to manage self-doubt to local resources where you can find a network of like-minded entrepreneurs who understand these pressures.

2. The Battle for Balance

Finding balance as an entrepreneur isn’t just about managing time—it’s about creating a structure that supports resilience and well-being. Establishing non-negotiable parts of your schedule, whether it’s time for family, exercise, or personal reflection, can anchor you during intense periods. Delegating isn’t just about lightening the load; it’s about protecting your energy for the work that truly matters. By setting boundaries and routines, you can create a balance that keeps you centered and ready for the long game.

Reflection Points: This post will provide prompts to help you assess your own balance, define your non-negotiables, and offer local resources for mental and physical wellness.

3. The Battle of Timing

Timing is one of the hardest parts of entrepreneurship, and it’s rarely fully within our control. Instead of aiming for perfect timing, we can focus on agility. Scheduling “pulse checks” on market trends, gathering regular customer feedback, and creating adaptable roadmaps allow you to stay responsive to shifts in timing. Mapping out a few alternative scenarios helps build confidence, so you’re ready to pivot when the unexpected happens.

Opportunities for Connection: This entry will highlight strategies for tracking industry shifts and connect you with local groups that meet regularly to share insights and stay informed.

4. The Battle with Failure as Feedback

“Fail fast” is a common phrase in startup culture, but the reality of failure is rarely so easy. By reframing failure as feedback, entrepreneurs can transform setbacks into stepping stones. Conducting post-mortems on projects—reviewing what worked, what didn’t, and what should change—turns every experience into a growth opportunity. Revisiting your “why” in these moments can also serve as a powerful reminder of your mission when facing challenges.

Resources: This post will offer tools for constructive reflection and connect you with local networks where founders can openly discuss setbacks and find support.

Embracing the Journey

Each of these unseen battles is an essential part of the entrepreneurial process. They’re not setbacks; they’re opportunities for growth, where resilience and adaptability are developed. Through “The Unseen Battles,” I’ll explore these challenges with empathy and honesty. Each post will provide resources, reflection prompts, and local connections to help make these battles a little easier to face.

Next Wednesday, we’ll start by exploring self-doubt and isolation—the experience of carrying the weight alone and learning to trust yourself despite the challenges. Let’s take on these unseen battles together, turning them into sources of strength, connection, and growth.

Love this idea, Adam! Eagerly awaiting the discussion around balance. Not that this is relevant to my life/business/brain/family/health or anything... ;)
