In October, I will introduce the work of two films centered on Nina Simone for the launch of UNR's Core Humanities' 2020 Black Film Festival. First, the award-winning experimental short film by Julie Dash, FOUR WOMEN (with Nina Simone's song of the same title), in which I collaborated as dancer-choreographer https://juliedash.tv/2016/01/13/four-women/; second, WHAT HAPPENED, MISS SIMONE, the documentary by filmmaker Liz Garbus. Themes running through our lives as women artists of color in an afflicted America are meted out against the pervasive sickness from which no one is immune, while acknowledging how we have navigated the terrain, trying to "walk with grace amid the mud" ('What Happened'). Last Word: 'As an artist, Humanities educator, and world citizen, I propose this thought: we can only imagine a future if we can re-imagine our present. It is a call to each and every one of us.'
