Launching "Insight in AI" and asking the right questions

Last week in Amsterdam, I had the chance to help launch a powerful new guide: Insight in AI or in Dutch "Inzicht in AI". It has the potential to provide the basis for a rich dialogue between very different Dutch stakeholders—from the research community to policymakers, journalists and the public. The Dutch case studies that Mariette Oosterwegel and Susan van Erp have carefully developed with focus groups from across the Netherlands over the past year show just how badly this dialogue is needed—and how AI forms the basis of so much decision making whether in healthcare, government or renewable energy. To really get through to people it’s essential that the examples and stories used are recognizable and resonate. They have achieved that--congratulations to both for their vision and hard work in making this happen during incredibly challenging times!

Supporting the debate around "Sound Science" has always been a strong partnership focus for Elsevier. Probably the foremost way we have done this is through a deep and longstanding collaboration with UK non profit Sense About Science, supporting their critical work over the past 16 years in raising awareness around peer review, evidence, myth-busting, early career scientist networks and creating a shared language and space for different stakeholders around data science which ultimately resulted in the 2019 Data Science: A guide for Society.

Imagine our delight when Tracey Brown, Director of Sense About Science alerted us to the important work that Mariette Oosterwegel was undertaking to create a localized Dutch version of the guide complete with case studies from Dutch politics and society, healthcare, and the climate discussion. ?The goal of both guides has been to take responsibility for equipping our societies to ask these crucial quality questions about how AI has helped to shape the decisions and policies we live with on a daily basis.

We’ve been proud to support the knowledge transfer between Sense about Science and KNAW to produce this critical guide and platform for dialogue. Our hope is that this guide will all be able to spur debate, educate and explore the unique Dutch context. I can’t wait to see what kind of insights and new case studies Insight in AI brings us!?Join us at ESOF 2022 in Leiden, NL on Friday, June "Breaking Down Dilemmas About AI In Science and Society" 17:15- 18:30

This is truly spot on. We are committed to help equip people "to ask these crucial quality questions about how AI has helped to shape the decisions and policies we live with on a daily basis". Thank you so much for your kind words and your support, Ylann Schemm!

And this is just the beginning of a broad dissemination plan. Insight in AI is meant to start conversations about artificial intelligent so that we can all get familiar with AI! Which questions about AI are relevant for you?
