Launching the Greatest American Cleanup | Purposeful Connections
As the Olympic Games continue in Paris, a sense of American pride has been rekindled across the nation. Team USA is racking up medals in gymnastics, swimming, fencing and more. But it’s not all about the gold—these athletes inspire us with their stories of teamwork, determination, and purpose. ?
While it’s awe-inspiring to see these acts of national unity on the global stage, it also serves as a reminder of the opportunities here at home to live these same values. Just last month, we partnered with the national nonprofit, Keep America Beautiful, to unveil their new initiative: the Greatest American Cleanup . Leading up to the once-in-a-lifetime celebration of America's 250th birthday in 2026, Keep America Beautiful is mobilizing 25,000 communities nationwide in hands-on service via tens of thousands of planned cleanups, green-ups, and other inspirational actions. With the help of iconic American corporate, federal government, municipal and nonprofit leaders—as well as today's top influencers—they are creating a path for everyone to participate actively and meaningfully in the event. It’s a unifying message inspired by the can-do American spirit.
Even in times of perceived division, these initiatives illustrate how it’s still possible, especially for purpose-driven leaders, to find common ground. We hope you join us in embracing these values of unity and altruism. Consider taking the pledge to get involved in your community, support local cleanups, and find ways to contribute to the greater good. Together, we can create a brighter, more connected future, Learn more about how Carol Cone ON PURPOSE is supporting Keep America Beautiful . — Hannah Freedman, Director
??? The Olympic village lives on: With the Olympics occurring during what may be Earth's hottest year on record, there has been a lot of talk about the Games' environmental footprint. Recycled plastic podiums and cardboard beds aside, the Paris Games are trying to tackle another major challenge by thinking long-term about how its housing will be used post-Games. Paris organizers opted to develop a new housing community in a traditionally impoverished area that was desparately in need of new, affordable housing options. The Olympic Village, situated at the convergence of three neighborhoods—Saint-Denis, Saint-Ouen, and Ile-Saint-Denis—will be used as office space for 6,000 workers and housing for 6,000 residents.
??? Making back-to-school greener: August marks the final stretch of summer—and for some students, it's already time to go back-to-school shopping. A necessary consumption period, some brands have worked to balance the excitement of buying new backpacks and all-new supplies with the responsibility of being a good environmental steward. Each year, a half a million pounds of crayons end up in landfills. Staples is hoping to redirect some of that waste through a new recycling partnership with Close The Loop to collect used backpacks and school supplies in stores. Participating recyclers will receive $10 off their purchase, further incentivizing participation.
