Launching the Catawba County Talent Strategy

The Catawba County Chamber Foundation is proud to announce the official launch of the Catawba County Talent Strategy, a transformative process that will help position our community for long-term economic prosperity. The first week of December marked a significant milestone as the Talent Strategy Steering Committee convened for the first time. This dynamic group, comprising 45 leaders from across business, government, education, and non-profit sectors, has come together to shape the future for our workforce and region.

With expert facilitation from Broad Ripple Strategies, a community and economic development consulting firm, the kick-off meeting set the foundation for the work ahead. Attendees delved into a high-level exploration of key workforce trends, challenges, and insights from recent survey, one-on-one interviews and a series of focus groups. These discussions laid the groundwork for a comprehensive, strategic process designed to address workforce challenges and seize new opportunities for talent development. Over the next several months, the Steering Committee will meet regularly, with a final strategic roadmap expected by late spring 2025.

The purpose of the Catawba County Talent Strategy is to strengthen our workforce by developing, attracting, and retaining the talent necessary for sustainable economic growth. This initiative builds upon foundational studies such as the Chamber Foundation’s Workforce Scan, the Catawba County Economic Development Corporation’s Industry Growth Analysis and Arts Culture Catawba’s Cultural Plan, among others. It focuses on two core objectives: cultivating “homegrown” talent by enhancing educational and training pathways for local residents, and fostering a vibrant community that attracts and retains skilled professionals.

Guiding this effort are three remarkable leaders who serve as the tri-chairs of the Steering Committee. Representing the business sector is Zack Cranford, founder of Cranford Hospitality, whose passion for innovation and entrepreneurship sets a forward-thinking tone for the initiative. From local government, Commissioner Randy Isenhower brings steadfast leadership and a commitment to enhancing economic vitality and quality of life for Catawba County residents. Finally, Dr. Garrett Hinshaw, President of Catawba Valley Community College, offers a wealth of expertise in educational excellence and workforce development. Together, their leadership ensures this strategy reflects the collective vision of our community.

The process to develop the Catawba County Talent Strategy will unfold in three key phases. The first phase focuses on research and input, leveraging quantitative data from previous studies and gathering qualitative insights through interviews and focus groups with stakeholders. The second phase will involve strategy development, during which the Steering Committee will craft a roadmap with actionable goals, objectives, and initiatives. The final phase will establish clear implementation guidelines, including detailed action plans, resource strategies, timelines, and metrics for success.

This is not just a plan; it represents a shared commitment to collaboration and innovation. Workforce development is the backbone of a thriving economy, and addressing these challenges is not just about meeting immediate needs but about building a foundation for the future.

To everyone invested and involved in this effort, I'd like to extend my deepest gratitude on behalf of the Catawba County Chamber Foundation and The Chamber of Catawba County. Your dedication to this shared vision will not only shape the future of Catawba County’s workforce but also ensure a legacy of economic growth and opportunity for generations to come.

Our engineering firm has been very deliberate at working with local high school students to offer job shadowing opportunities and internships with local college students (6 this past summer). These initiatives have really paid off for us over the past 20 years. We have several rock star employees who grew up locally, worked with us as interns, and are now part of the firm. I would be excited to help with this initiative. Thank you for this leadership.
