Sustainability professionals increasingly integrated into finance and legal teams

A recent survey of more than 1,100 sustainability professionals reveals that a growing number of businesses are integrating sustainability roles into finance and legal departments, driven by evolving disclosure requirements.

According to Trellis’s 2024 "State of the Sustainability Profession" report:

  • 21% of finance teams added sustainability-focused staff in 2023, up from 10% in 2022.
  • 27% of legal departments onboarded sustainability hires, compared to 13% in 2020.

The report highlights a shift in reporting structures:

  • 14% of CSOs now report to legal functions, up from 5% a decade ago
  • Increased sustainability reporting to finance, supply chain, and corporate affairs.
  • Decline in sustainability reporting to health and safety departments.

Mars UK begins reporting Social Value Impact

Credit: Pablo Merchan Montes

玛氏食品 UK has recently begun measuring and reporting its social value contribution to the UK economy, focusing on community initiatives, local skills development, and responsible business practices.

The company aims to quantify its broader impact beyond the $7.7 billion it contributes annually through GVA, in line with the UK's Social Value Act of 2012.

Partnering with the Social Value Portal, Mars UK seeks to benchmark its social value, ensuring a comprehensive view of its contributions. This collaboration enables Mars to track and enhance its social, environmental, and economic initiatives.

“The work we are doing with the Social Value Portal is giving us a baseline, allowing us to track our activity with a more holistic view of our social, environmental and economic activity. The more we collaborate, support and drive innovation in Social Value projects and partnerships, the greater the opportunity to enrich and empower our shared communities, local economies and planet for the long term.” - Adam Grant , General Manager, Mars Wrigley UK.

In 2023, Mars UK generated over £88 million in social value, highlighting its commitment to community enrichment, innovation, and sustainable economic support. Each employee contributed about £23,000 in social value, reflecting the company's collective impact.

RH Amar joins all-female team for cycle across Kenya

Credit: GROW for Good Challenge

RH Amar ’s Brand Controller, Anne-Marie Cannon , is part of an all-female team from the UK food and farming industry, preparing for the GROW for Good Challenge.

The challenge will see the team take on a 75-km cycle across Kenya to raise funds and awareness for Farm Africa, an international charity.

Arriving in Kenya on 20 October, the team will cycle through Embu County, where they will stop to work alongside female farmers involved in Farm Africa’s regenerative agriculture project. They’ll engage in hands-on activities such as composting and mulching, learning how the charity supports farmers through village-based advisors who teach sustainable farming practices.

At the end of their journey on 25 October, the team will participate in a roundtable event in Nairobi, discussing the importance of empowering women in the global food system with Kenyan female industry leaders.

Their goal is to raise £75,000, which will go towards helping small-scale farmers in eastern Africa grow more food, adapt to climate change, and protect the environment.
