Launch of cloud-based AI personal computer
Are we really innovating, or just rebranding old concepts with flashy new buzzwords?
In 1993, IBM’s S/390 mainframes—accessed via thin clients—already showcased a powerful form of distributed computing. Then in 1996, Compaq coined the phrase “cloud computing” in an internal document, repackaging known principles with a catchy term. By 2000, “cloud gaming” was reshaping entertainment—coincidentally, the same year I specialized in Artificial Intelligence.
Fast-forward to 2025 and the headlines are buzzing, with reporting that Jio Platforms is set to launch a “cloud-based AI personal computer.” It’s exciting, of course—but let’s be honest: aren’t we just refining and scaling what’s been around for decades?
While today’s machines are more powerful and the technology undeniably more advanced, it’s still a testament to how “new” solutions can sometimes be evolutions of older ideas. So before we hail every update as a game-changer, let’s remember the long journey that got us here—and use those foundational insights to power true progress.
