Laugh a Little
Spring break in Mexico is over and the 14 of us girls are ready to be home. The airport is an hour away and we are shuffled into a large sprinter van. Two groups of guys already spread out in each row, thinking they would have it to themselves. Once we all pile in a seat, a few more stragglers come onto the bus and are stuck sitting in the aisle.?
They lock up and start sending us on our way out of the resort. Due to the number of people and luggage in the van, we are probably over the weight limit. The van begins to crawl out of the gates at around 2 mph uphill. Not one person on the bus has said a word. Meanwhile, our spring break group chat is being flooded with jokes, gifs, and poking fun at the awkwardness of the situation. The silence is painful with no music or conversations happening. Soon, the van erupts into laughter as people realize this jam-packed bus will be our situation for the next hour.?
That’s when BeReal knew what they were doing and set off the ?? Time to BeReal ?? notification. Slowly, people looked around and the awkwardness was broken as everyone took their BeReals laughing with strangers.
The rest of the van ride consisted of trying to hold in laughter as the group chat continued to go off. During this time, it got me thinking about how much I truly adore laughter.
Whether it’s making others laugh or laughing with others, it is my favorite hobby. My whole life I have been drawn to comedy movies, stand-up comedy routines, and shows like Saturday Night Live. For a long time, I even believed I would replace Kristen Wiig as the new Target Lady.?

The first comedy routine I remember watching on DVR over, and over again was Kevin James. It made me laugh each time I watched it, and since then I have loved watching stand-up comedy. I recently saw Bert Kreishcer with my sister and remember my cheeks hurting from smiling throughout the entire routine. This type of laughter is something I crave in my day-to-day life.?
The people I am drawn to are always those who can make me laugh, and I can make them laugh even harder. The energy and joy that comes from the simple act of laughter are infectious. That’s why they have things like laughter therapy or yoga. It has the ability to change awkward situations like a long, humid bus ride into a long-lasting memory. Most of my favorite memories consist of those where my friends and I were cackling about something others would perceive as foolish.
They say laughter is medicine, and while it is cheesy, it is true and there are even studies to prove it. No matter who you are, when it is, where we are, and what you’re laughing about, I will always join in.
