Act I: A Wedding and a Farewell
Under the balmy embrace of the tropical sun on a latitude 14° island, a small garden brimmed with joy and laughter. Crimson blooms and verdant foliage framed the scene, while coconut palms swayed lazily in rhythm with the lapping waves. The fiery hues of the setting sun painted the sky in warm, golden strokes, casting a magical glow over the celebration.
Lucy, a vision in her pristine white gown, strolled arm-in-arm with Anson, who cut a dashing figure in a timeless black suit. They walked a flower-strewn path, their every step greeted by friends’ warm smiles and heartfelt blessings.
As the festivities reached their zenith, Anson raised his glass, his voice thick with emotion: “Crimson leaves and silver hair—symbols of a love that endures. We are eternally grateful to this land, which bore witness to our story, and to all of you who have gathered to bid us farewell. Though we’re embarking on a new chapter in North America, the sunlit shores and boundless warmth of this island will forever remain in our hearts.”
A ripple of applause mingled with laughter and cheers. Amid the din, a voice called out, “Lucy, Anson, how did your love story begin? What brought you to this moment?”
The couple exchanged knowing smiles. Lucy leaned into the microphone, her voice brimming with warmth and confidence: “It all started three years ago—during a time of crisis...”
Act II: The Crisis at DragonCuisine
Three years ago, Lucy was the Customer Service Manager at DragonCuisine, an exclusive restaurant famed for its "groundbreaking Chinese cuisine" and "imperial cultural experience." Established by Ryan, a Chinese entrepreneur, the restaurant catered to a discerning clientele of high-ranking officials and wealthy patrons. Ornate decor and impeccable service were its hallmarks, and Lucy took immense pride in her role, even as the relentless pace tested her mettle.
One fateful Monday, tension hung heavy in the air. The icy blast of the air-conditioning did little to cool the fire in Ryan’s glare as he paced the room.
“A VIP client complained to the board about our abysmal service!” Ryan’s voice was sharp enough to cut through stone. “Do you even understand what that means? He spends tens of thousands dollars here every month—he’s not just a customer; he’s our lifeblood!”
Slamming a stack of papers onto the table, Ryan zeroed in on Lucy. “Lucy, where were you? On leave? And who approved this—Frank, HR?”
Lucy bowed her head, the weight of his accusations palpable. She had taken a 14-day leave to attend to urgent family matters, a reprieve earned through months of working Sundays. But to Ryan, her absence was nothing short of a betrayal.
“Fourteen days?! Outrageous!” His voice rose in disbelief. He turned to the store manager, Frank. “Where did she even get this leave?”
Frank stammered, “We, uh… we allow staff to trade overtime for annual leave. It’s an unwritten rule.”
“Unwritten?” Ryan’s glare intensified as he pivoted to HR. “Does this rule exist on paper?!”
The HR manager could only shake her head in resignation. Ryan declared her dismissal on the spot: “A major oversight like this? Unforgivable. Pack your things and leave today.”
Frank didn’t escape unscathed either. “You’re suspended for 10 days to reflect on your failure as a manager!” Ryan’s punishment was brutal—Frank only had 5 days of annual leave per year. He’d now have to repay the deficit with weeks of overtime on Sundays.
Lucy, too, found herself swept up in the storm. “You’ll take over HR responsibilities,” Ryan commanded icily. “Start with recruitment.”
Though overwhelmed, Lucy’s upbringing in traditional Chinese values dictated unconditional compliance. With no HR experience and limited English skills, she accepted the role without protest.
Act III: A Chance Encounter
On a crisp autumn evening, Lucy was sifting through a mountain of resumes in the recruitment system when one caught her eye: Anson. The photo depicted a confident young man clad in a chef’s uniform, radiating a perfect mix of self-assurance and approachability.
“This is the one,” she whispered under her breath, as a spark of excitement lit up her face.
Without skipping a beat, she picked up the phone and dialed the number. After a few rings, a voice as smooth as velvet came through, “Hello, this is Anson.”

The conversation that followed painted a picture of a seasoned professional. A graduate of China’s New Oriental Culinary Academy, Anson had spent five years mastering his craft and sharpening his managerial acumen in China. His career then took him across borders to Qatar and Bahrain, where he spearheaded startup projects for a prestigious global five-star hotel chain. Now, he was holding the reins as the executive chef of Chinese cuisine at GH Hotel.
Lucy was over the moon. “Anson, your expertise in systems-building and your international track record are a match made in heaven for us. We’re the gold standard of Chinese dining on this island, and we’d be thrilled to have you on the team!”
There was a brief pause before Anson replied, “That sounds promising, but what’s the story with the benefits?”
Lucy sidestepped the question with practiced ease, her tone brimming with confidence. “Let me put it this way—our average table check rivals a local’s two-month income or a foreigner’s weekly earnings. You’ll be in your element here.”
Anson chuckled softly before relenting. “All right, let’s get an interview on the calendar.”
Act IV: Disappointment
The interview was a train wreck, leaving Ryan red-faced with anger. He stormed into Lucy’s office, his frustration spilling over. “Lucy! Who is this person you’ve recommended?! He’s got zero experience in market-oriented restaurants—just holed up in structured and insulated hotel tasting dishes everyday. His English is atrocious! And he has the audacity to ask for $10,000 a month after tax? At best, he’s worth $4,000!”
Lucy’s spirits sank, but she refused to crumble under the weight of the setback. Mustering her resolve, she conveyed the feedback to Anson.
To her surprise, Anson’s response was measured and unwavering. “Thank you for being upfront, Lucy. It’s true, I don’t have much exposure to social dining, but that doesn’t diminish my worth. How about joining me at GH Hotel’s party and meet my team? I think it’ll be an eye-opener.”
With that, he extended an olive branch, and Lucy couldn’t help but feel a glimmer of hope.
Act V: Revelations
Stepping into the grandiose lobby of GH Hotel, Lucy felt like she had entered an entirely different world. The lavish buffet tables, adorned with culinary masterpieces, were a feast for the eyes, while Anson’s colleagues carried themselves with an air of polished professionalism. To her disbelief, some of Anson’s subordinates earned salaries that put her director’s paycheck to shame.
Adding insult to injury, GH employees enjoyed the luxury of two-day weekends, 25 days of annual leave, and two-bedroom free accommodations. By comparison, Lucy’s cramped shared room and grueling six-day workweeks suddenly felt like an unrelenting grind. Bitterness rose in her chest like a tide.
“Anson, are you hiring? Put in a good word for me!” she joked, a half-smile playing on her lips but her eyes betraying her longing.
Act VI: Determined to Change
Anson pulled a few strings and arranged for Lucy to interview at GH, but her excitement was quickly dashed. The interviewer, unimpressed by her shaky English, dismissed her with a sneer: “How have you even managed to survive here with such poor English?”
The words cut deep, but they also hit home. Lucy realized this was her moment of reckoning—a wake-up call she could no longer ignore. Determined to turn the tables, she enrolled in intensive English classes, with Anson by her side as both her cheerleader and study partner.
After a year of burning the midnight oil, Lucy emerged victorious, boasting an impressive IELTS score of 7.0. Armed with newfound confidence, she returned to GH for a second interview. This time, she nailed it. Her eloquence and poise won over the panel, and she secured the job with a salary that was twice her previous earnings. With 25 days of leave and a renewed sense of self-worth, Lucy finally left behind the craphole and reclaimed her professional dignity.
Act VII: A New Chapter
As the wedding ceremony unfolded, Lucy and Anson stood side by side, glowing with happiness and ready to embrace their next adventure. With transfers to the US just around the corner, Lucy couldn’t help but reflect on how far they had come.
“Opportunities may be thin on the ground here,” she said, her smile warm and genuine, “but this place has taught us that when you’re ready to grow, even the sky isn’t the limit.”
Thunderous applause filled the air as their loved ones cheered, their voices a symphony of joy and support. Hand in hand, Lucy and Anson stepped into their future, brimming with hope and promise, ready to craft the next chapter of their remarkable story.
