The Latinista 2018: Year in Review
Yai Vargas
Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Professional / LinkedIn Networking Ninja / Founder: The Latinista / Author & Speaker
One of the fastest growing segments in the workplace is the Latino U.S. workforce, which has grown significantly from 10.7 million in 1990 to 26.8 million in 2016 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. However, there are only 11 CEOs that are Latino and only ONE of them is a LATINA. The Latinista's mission is to develop programming for career and leadership growth that in turn helps us get more women of color into positions of influence and power. We gather in three cities for monthly workshops: New York City, Chicago and Miami (In 2019 we'll be gearing up in Los Angeles) Watch our About The Latinista video here.
We focus our workshops around 4 main pillars:
- Career Strategy & Planning
- LinkedIn Professional Branding
- Financial Literacy & Wellness
- Public Speaking & Communication
With over 30 workshops completed this year and almost 1,000 invested members and attendees impacted, we've developed some significant partnerships. Here are a few.
The Financial Gym
Founder Shannon McLay opened this space in order to help you understand how to manage debt, fix your credit, help you save and teach you investing techniques. We hosted over 7 events in this incredible space and welcomed many Latinista members as Financial gym clients.

We also hosted this event in Los Angeles! If you're interested in joining the Los Angeles community we're building this year, please reach out to Jessica Vasquez.
The Flatiron School
An accelerated programming school that inspired a coding bootcamp industry. They opened their doors to us in April as we hosted this incredible panel of Latinas in STEM featuring Scientist Itzia Arroyo, Technologist & Engineer Dora Maria Abreu and Mathematician Ivonne Diaz Claisse. NBC Universal
Unidos, Latino Employee Resource Group. Career Women on the RISE.
When you work for a corporation that cares about diversity & inclusion and the wellbeing of their workforce, it shows. We developed a strong relationship with NBC Universal and their Latino Employee resource group Unidos (thanks to Salvador Mendoza who leads these efforts) and built upon our Career Women on the RISE program. The program focused on the goal-setting, strategy building and execution of your career mobility.

Prospanica New York
Under the management of Judy Ramos and Janine Jansen, Prospanica NY and The Latinista teamed up for numerous LinkedIn webinars and workshops. The Confident Public Speaker
One of our core pillars is helping you articulate your ideas, refining your elevator pitch and helping you become more brave when communicating in front of 5 or 500 people. Minue Yoshida is our public speaking coach and she has made her entire career revolve around helping you shine, authentically and in the most effective way. This past year we held a record number of Confident Public Speaking workshops for organizations like HBO, S&P Global and Premiere Response.
Thank you to Martha Velasquez, Janine Jansen and Jason Aydelott for making this all happen within your organizations and trusting in our commitment to develop your leaders into more confident public speakers!

Leading with your Feminine Edge - Leadership Workshop
This is a four-part experiential workshop series exploring a new model for feminine leadership based on latest findings in neuroscience and ancient spiritual wisdom. During the workshop series, we learned how to connect and cultivate the feminine powers of fluidity, emotions, magnetism, intuition, nurturance, interdependence, nature, and embodiment. These are qualities that are biologically, psychologically, and spiritually more prevalent in women and can be proactively accessed to create a new personal leadership paradigm for women. Thank you to our sponsors BumbleBizz, Delta Airlines and Seahorse Ranch (where we will be hosting our final workshop in Feb. 2019) JOIN US!

Money is Power: featuring Ellevest Co-founder Sallie Krawcheck
The Latinista and Ellevest worked together to bring women in NYC financial knowledge and tools. Ellevest was created to help women close their gender money gaps and unleash their financial power.
As part of this 60-minute workshop, Sallie Krawcheck and Rachel Sanborn of Ellevest covered some of the most important things you should be doing with your finances in each life stage. We also went over the 80/20 rule for managing your money. We walked walk away with key insights on how to prioritize your financial goals, and how to balance today’s needs with your goals for Future You.

Latinas Equal Pay Day Commemoration Project
November 1st, 2018 marked Latinas Equal Pay Day, a national day to create awareness about the pay gap impacting Latinas. This day reflects how many extra days in the 2018 calendar year a Latina had to work to make up for her missing earnings in 2017. In response to a commitment to close the wage gap, LeanIn.Org, launched the #47PercentCounts campaign and partners with Adidas, Lyft, P&G and Reebok to create awareness. The Latinista partnered with Lean In Women of Color and other orgs to further our mission of closing the pay inequity. Read more on Julene Allen's post as she leads the Women of Color chapter out of Chicago.
I spoke on the importance of recognizing this day in an interview on Forbes and Yahoo Finance.
Latina Surge and Montclair State University came together in New Jersey for an event hosted with President Susan B. Cole at the MSU Feliciano School of Business in Montclair.
