Latina Equal Pay Day

The Methodology Behind Latina Equal Pay Wages

Do Latinas earn $0.57 cents, $0.49 cents,? or $0.54 cents for every $1.00 earned by white, non-hispanic men? We, too, came across that same question and we turned to the expertise of our partner to learn the how and the why behind the equal pay earnings.?

The Equal Rights Advocates report that “a change in methodology for calculating the wage gaps meant that the 2022 equal pay days were later than in prior years” explaining the later dates. Every year, the Equal Pay Today coalition uses U.S. Census Bureau earnings data to calculate the wage gap number for all women vs. all men. Furthermore, they also calculate the wage gap faced by moms (across race and ethnicity) as compared to dads. This is even more important for Latinas because during the pandemic “more than 1 million Latinas were forced out of the workforce” (Latina, 2022).?

According to the article, “Here’s What To Know About Latina Equal Pay Day This Year,” Ramirez highlights the pay gap “does not represent all women or even all Latina workers.” This is another reason why the number has changed, this year the EPT coalition made a decision to change the methodology and also include earnings data for part time workers (in addition to the full time, year-round workers we used in the past). This is? a positive and inclusive step forward for overall Latina representation.?

?All in all, to say that $0.57 cents, $0.49 cents, and $0.54 cents are all accurate Latina earning numbers - it’s the census data source that has changed.?

  • 2019 Census - $0.57 cents (for full time, year round workers only)
  • 2020 Census - $0.49 cents
  • 2021 Census - $0.54 cents (including part time)

Thank you to the Equal Rights Advocates team for providing us with context to better understand and therefore advocate and educate on behalf of Latina Equal Pay Day. We hope that this post brings visibility to the #invisiblemillion.?
